School board candidates interview for position
October 22, 2008

After nearly two hours of interview questions, five Issaquah School Board candidates breathed a sigh of relief Oct. 20 with the first hurdle for the vacant District Director 4 position behind them.
The position was left vacant when Mike Winkler resigned Sept. 11. The position represents the Issaquah Highlands, Issaquah downtown core, Preston, Mirrormont and Tiger Mountain areas.
The selected candidate will serve the remainder of Winkler’s term, through November 2009.
Five area residents applied: Steven Ellis, Chad Magendanz, Margaret (Peggy) Moe, Carla Wigen and Jeffrey Wood.
The candidates answered a variety of questions posed by school board members; topics included regarding education finance, board members’ role in labor negotiations, policy governance, measuring the district’s end statements and mission, and what the district is doing well and what it can do better.
There was also time allotted for community questions, but none were submitted.
Each candidate was given a three-minute opening and closing statement, allowing them to discuss their qualifications and reasons for applying.
After closing remarks, board members met in executive session to discuss each candidate’s qualifications.
The board could’ve selected a candidate then, but instead decided to vote for candidates at the next regularly scheduled public meeting.
If one candidate receives a majority of votes —three of the four members — that candidate will fill the position.
If there are several candidates who obtain votes from school board members, second-round interviews are scheduled for Oct. 28 for those candidates who obtain the most votes. Board members will set a time for those interviews at the Oct. 22 meeting, if necessary.
The new candidate will be sworn into office at the Nov. 12 board meeting.
