A suspicious-looking cardboard box caught the attention Oct. 24 of a King County detective, Issaquah police and the Bellevue police bomb squad.

The box was discovered at 8:35 a.m. by the detective, who was reporting to work at King County District Court, 5415 220th Ave. S.E. He spotted it right outside the courthouse entrance.

“It had tape around the edges,” said Issaquah Police Cmdr. Scott Behrbaum. “It looks like it was a box from an event the previous evening that someone had left outside.”

That was not obvious at first. As a precaution, police evacuated the courthouse and called the bomb squad. Behrbaum said one squad member approached the box in his blast suit, set up an X-ray machine and scanned it where it lay. There was nothing inside.

“It was a pretty contained incident,” Behrbaum said. “We do want to err on the side of caution when it comes to suspicious packages, especially when it is in front of public buildings.”
