City budget waits on revenue forecast

The City Council discussed the 2009 budget for several hours Oct. 22 and 23, but members said they have just been looking at small items so far.
“We’ve still got some work to do,” said Councilman Fred Butler. “We have gone through the budget a couple of times, but we haven’t got down to the point of making decisions. The administration is still responding to questions, and questions are still being developed.”
“We’re just sort of nibbling around the edges,” agreed Councilman John Traeger.
He said that should start to change Oct. 29, when the council sees new revenue projections from the Finance Department.
The public gets a chance to weigh in Nov. 3 at a hearing on property tax revenue, which comes before the City Council during its regular meeting. The next budget meeting after that is set for 6 p.m. Nov. 6 in the Cougar Room of City Hall.
On Dec. 1, the council holds another public hearing on the 2009 budget, followed by official presentation of the council’s changes to the administration’s proposal. Finally, on Dec. 15, the council will adopt a final budget for 2009.
