School spirit lives despite construction noise

The rain pours down from the heavens above as students and teachers monotonously file down the two sets of stairs that connect portable village to the rest of the school. As students scamper to their next classes, the hurried footsteps echo through the halls of Issaquah High School. Most students are none too pleased about the recent construction occurring at IHS. In place of a high school softball field, unattractive portable classrooms that house the English and math departments of the school now reside.

One feels cut off from the rest of the school, isolated from fellow classmates and from any sort of civilization. But the temporary problems have almost become existential, just another part of being a student at IHS.

Thanks to student-run Associated Student Body activities and events, school spirit is at an all-time high, with purple and gold gracing the hallways at every turn. I-Vision, the school’s student-led television show, is the best it has been in years, with senior Alex Weber leading the charge, promoting all types of school spirit and encouraging students to actively participate at IHS.

Issaquah’s pride and joy, the football team, has become an unstoppable force to be reckoned with and, for some surprisingly remarkable reason, girls’ volleyball games are drawing the highest fan turnout in history.

Even though the school is going through a dramatic transformation, the pride and tradition that the Issaquah motto advocates is being harnessed by the thousand-plus students who walk the halls every day. Out with the old; in with the new!
