Coaches and sports administrators toss about the term scholar-athlete too casually. But Liberty High School senior Greg Ericksen embodies the image of a true scholar athlete.
Ericksen, a co-captain on the Patriots football team earned second team All-KingCo honors as a running back and defensive back. He’s also a standout student with a 3.9 grade point average who has earned a college scholarship from Washington State University. He’s also waiting to hear if he’s been accepted to Harvard University.
Many students keep a busy schedule, but few match Ericksen’s. Here’s a look:
Tough schedule: Ericksen is taking Advanced Placement calculus, biology and psychology. He’s taken AP classes since his junior year.
Psych out: His favorite class is AP psychology. “I like learning how things work and how people interact with each other.”
Gridiron giant: Ericksen ran for 971 yards on 130 carries and 16 touchdowns. He caught 11 passes for 178 yards and two TDs. On defense, he had one interception and was among the team leaders in tackles. In the regular season finale, Oct. 31, he recorded nine tackles against Mount Si.
Camaraderie and teamwork: “The lessons I learned playing football will prepare me for my life after high school.”
Scholarship: He received a $6,000 Regents Scholar scholarship award to Washington State University.
College plans: He is applying to several colleges, including Harvard. He was contacted by the football coach at Carleton College about possibly playing for the small college in Northfield. Minn. Carleton College ranks as the No. 8 liberal arts college, according to 2008 U.S. News and World Reports rankings.
Helping out: Ericksen volunteers with Athletes for Kids, a Sammamish-based nonprofit, founded in 2001 at Skyline High School, that matches elementary and middle school-aged children with special needs with high school athletes willing to volunteer as role models and mentors. The program has nearly 100 mentor-athlete volunteers in six Eastside schools. “I enjoying building relationships with these kids,” he said. “I like being someone who they can relate to.”
Leadership roles: He served as co-captain of the varsity football team.
Traveling man: His favorite trips were to the family’s timeshare at Cabo San Lucas, Mexico. He also enjoys skiing and snowboarding at Tamarack Resort in Idaho.
Career goals: “I’d like to go to graduate school and eventually become a chiropractor. Two years ago, I went to a chiropractor when I injured my back. I know how much the chiropractor helped me out and I’d like to help others. I’ve been there. I know what the pain is like.”
