No refunds for missed garbage collection

For Issaquah residents who have waited a month for garbage collection, you should know that you won’t be getting a refund on your utility bill.

Snow and the holidays played havoc with curbside collection in December. Trash started to pile up.

But the remedy offered by contractor Waste Management is to collect double or triple loads on the next scheduled collection day, and not to give customers their money back.

The same is true for Allied Waste, which collects garbage in the unincorporated neighborhood of Klahanie but not in Issaquah.

“We haven’t missed a pickup,” said Allied Waste spokesman Nels Johnson. “We’ll pick up double their garbage on the next pickup day with no charge for service.”

Waste Management’s drivers are back to running their regular routes.

“So far, we have been able to get to everything on the routes,” said spokeswoman Katie Salinas. From Dec. 29 to Jan. 2, the company increased its residential and commercial pickup capacity 25 percent by increasing the number of trucks in use.

“For residential recycling, we added 35 percent,” she said.

Advice to residents is posted on the city’s Web site.

“When weather conditions prevent safe collection, a double (or triple) load will be collected at no extra cost on your next regular collection day,” the site states. “Please remove your containers from the curb until your next scheduled service day. Due to the New Year’s Day holiday this week, Thursday customers are scheduled for pickup on Friday, and Friday customers are scheduled for pickup on Saturday.”

Hey Yea, that’s a great plan until you realize that you have to not only pay for the service never provided, but also go out and buy containers to hold all of the extra trash and recycling for 2-3 weeks.
