“A coward dies a thousand deaths.”
The night began with an empty chair and a microphone, but one by one, some of Issaquah’s writers, thinkers and observers came to the stage to bare their thoughts and feelings to the crowd in the form of poetry.
“It is an act of personal courage, and anyone who doesn’t understand that needs to try it,” Nancy Talley said. “Poetry is about a multitude of voices, and when you put together the multitude of voices, it’s a great joy to hear.”
The would-be poets gathered Jan. 20 for the first Open Mic Poetry Readings at Vino Bella Wine and Espresso Bar. Talley, who hosted the event, formulated the idea.
The night brought together six writers, including Talley, who read their works to an unusually packed Tuesday night crowd. Read more
‘The Importance of Being Earnest’ a sumptuous delight

Sumptuous. Delightful. Exquisite. Decadent.
That’s the sets, the dresses, the cast and the lines.
“The Importance of Being Earnest” is deeply shallow and shallowly deep. And that makes it a lot of fun.
But this isn’t a musical. There’s no singing and there’s no dancing. If you go, you’re going to have to work for this one.
But “Earnest” is totally worth it, so pay close attention.
There are three acts, not two. So, when the first interval happens, it’s a surprise that left many people wondering, how can it already be halfway through? Also, those two intervals are not very long, which is amazing, because that’s when the crew changes the sets.
A city house becomes a country garden becomes the inside of the country home in nothing flat. And all three of those places are gorgeous in their simplicity. Read more

If you hold the opposing team to nine points in the first two quarters of a game for the top spot in KingCo 4A Crest Division, you’ve got it made.
That’s what the Issaquah High School girls did against the Eastlake Wolves Jan. 24 at Issaquah High School.
And despite an 11-2 Eastlake run in the third quarter, the Lady Eagles (8-1, 10-3) held it together long enough to outscore and outhustle the visiting Lady Wolves (7-3, 9-4). Issaquah maintained its spot atop the division with a 48-35 win. Read more

The Issaquah High School Eagles’ recent work during practice on defensive cohesiveness finally paid off over the weekend against the Eastlake Wolves.
After losing to Redmond Jan. 23, the Eagles managed to stay tight on defense and power through the Wolves’ sometimes weak transition defense to come away with a 57-49 win Jan. 24 at Issaquah High School.
“We’ve been exercising trying to play together as a defense, and in general just playing together,” Issaquah senior guard Ross Zuhl said after the game. “After (Friday’s) loss, we really just wanted to come out here and get a victory.” Read more

Skyline High School junior Danny Christianson had 38 seconds to make his move. He was down 3-1 in the final period of his 160-pound bout against Newport’s Ali Saribas.
They had been deadlocked for the duration of the round, but Christianson scored two points with a takedown in the final seconds and sent it into overtime.
“I just had to set it up and be patient for it, because a lot of times I get impatient and that’s where I get in trouble,” Christianson said.
They had one minute to finish it off, but all it took after the two staggered across the mat for a few seconds was a two-point takedown by Christianson. Read more
Wake-up call works for Liberty girls

Once the fear of losing became real, there was no question the Liberty High School girls basketball team was going to win.
Aided by double-figure scoring from both Corinna VanHurston and Halie Ericksen, the Patriots overcame a small second-half deficit to defeat league rival Mount Si 44-39 at home Jan. 23.
Liberty controlled the game in the first half, but a quick 9-0 run by the Wildcats to begin the third period gave the visitors a 6-point lead. That was all the incentive the Patriots needed, as they responded with a 14-0 streak of their own and never trailed again.
“We were full-court pressing and got a couple of easy hoops. They got a little rattled and some things went our way,” Liberty head coach Randy Leifer said. “We needed to try something to get the game turned around.”
The Patriots trailed 24-18 when the momentum swing began with a 3-pointer on the wing from VanHurston. Layups by Alexis Court and Ericksen were followed by another VanHurston 3-pointer and, before the period ended, Liberty had suddenly seized a 30-24 advantage. Read more
Kicking up a good time at the Hoedown

Pine Lake Middle School eighth-grader Annika Dybevik really likes to line dance. She’s been doing it practically since birth, thanks to her siblings who attended the school.
Actually, she has attended the Pine Lake Hoedown event with her parents and siblings since she was about 6 months old, she said as she stood with friends in the school’s gymnasium between songs. That makes it her 13th time, longer than anyone else who came to the Jan. 23 event, according to physical education teacher Roy Cress, who announced her milestone during the hoedown. Read more
Final exams are all the buzz at Issaquah High School

For the past week, students at Issaquah High School have been abuzz with one topic: final exams.
Many students feel the pressure from these exams as the date comes closer and closer, as they try to cram in some last-minute studying before their 90-minute test. Before school and at lunchtime, the library is packed full with students preparing for their finals.
Although the stress level escalates during this time, IHS students manage to stay positive by helping their fellow students study for the exams. Teams of students sit around the library or the lunch table, assisting their peers through a difficult calculus problem, explaining a physics formula, practicing the conjugation of Spanish verbs or describing a literary concept.
