Elementary school students are invited to participate in the fifth annual Bridging Futures contest, hosted by the I-90 Wildlife Bridges Coalition and the state Department of Transportation.
Organizers hope the contest will help educate children about issues related to wildlife and roads.
Students may use information from contest organizers to produce drawings that show how officials can work to benefit animals and humans in transportation planning. The information is available at www.wsdot.wa.gov. Use the search to find “Bridging Futures V Art and Essay Contest.”
Students should submit a drawing or graphic design on an 8 1/2 by 11-inch piece of paper that depicts how officials can make roads safer for wildlife and people. They can choose to represent the problem, the solution or both in their image. Examples are available on the Web site.
Entrants should also provide a written description of their drawings, or thoughts on the topic. The written description can be no longer than one page.
Entries must be postmarked no later than April 20.
Judges will pick two grand-prize winners — one from each side of the Cascades. The winning drawings will be displayed on a billboard throughout summer. The winners will receive a framed copy of their artwork.
Winners from each participating school district will also be selected. All winners will receive a prize package.
