Contractors will tear down Issaquah High School’s gymnasium in the morning to make way for a new one as part of the school’s extensive remodel.

Demolition crews from Cornerstone General Contractors Inc. began work in other areas April 15.

Exterior demolition to remove the gym begins tomorrow at 7 a.m.. Students and employees will attend a ceremony marking the occasion.

Cornerstone, a Bothell-based contractor, was awarded the contract for the remodel by school board members March 11. Cornerstone had the lowest bid for the project, $61.5 million, among the nine contractors who submitted applications for the work. The project budget for the school rebuild is $84 million.

Crews have been moving onto the site since March 25, surveying, prioritizing work and prepping the site with fencing and trailers.

The project is awaiting final construction permits from the city. Work on new buildings won’t begin until then.
