One year ago, Kelly McDonald’s multiple sclerosis diagnosis seemed like an impossible obstacle to overcome.
Her husband died a few months earlier; she was a single, working mother to a then 3- year-old daughter; and images of bed-ridden patients she used to care for earlier in her nursing career flooded her thoughts. Read more
Hoopin’ for charity

Brian Comer, 15, of Sammamish, aims for a basket from the free throw line April 18 during Hoops of Hope at the community center. Comer, an Eastside Catholic High School student, raised $500 in pledges, and was one of 70 participants who raised $3,500 for orphan sponsorships, and school and health construction projects in Africa, all for children impacted by AIDS. Current and former Clark Elementary School students get their hands dirty for a good cause April 6 planting sedges, rushes and other wetland species in a new wetland demonstration project at the Issaquah Salmon Hatchery. The science and technology fourth- and fifth-grade class taught by Ellen Ferrin and Liza Rickey raised $2,000 last year at an ecology-friendly car wash, and donated the full amount to FISH for the educational wetland display. It previously passed the Senate 46-0, and is now before the Senate for concurrence with House amendments that limit the waiver to certain small businesses, including those that provide care to vulnerable adults or children. King County seeks landfill expansion here

As they consider proposals to expand the capacity of Cedar Hills Regional Landfill in south Issaquah, county officials want input from residents about the project.
King County Solid Waste Division Managing Engineer Shirley Jurgensen said the agency wants public comments and questions about issues related to the proposals. Comments will be accepted until May 1.
During the next step of the process, the Solid Waste Division will conduct an environmental review of landfill redevelopment options. Read more

Do the Céilidh dance

As a longtime Issaquah resident, Doug Browning has seen the city grow into an arts destination. He’s even helped the DownTown Issaquah Association implement the Music on the Streets program.
But even with all of the locations to enjoy the arts, Browning noticed something was still missing, namely a place to kick up your heels.
“A lot of countries have folk dancing,” he said. “Before the days of MTV, people would gather on Friday or Saturday nights and have a dance. It was their primary form of entertainment.” Read more

As Issaquah junior Junpei Tsuji drove up the field against the Eastlake Wolves in the 31st minute, he had the space and the time. He was more than 30 yards out, but why not take a shot?
That’s what went through the midfielder’s head before he surprised everyone April 17 with a perfectly lofted ball that cleared the outstretched hands of Eastlake goalkeeper Victor Kollar. The shot threaded through at center goal, just below the crossbar for the game’s first goal.
“I just decided to rip it because I wanted to score a goal,” Tsuji said of his first goal of the season. “I’ve got the space, I’ve got the time, why not take the shot?” Read more
