Liberty wins first 3A/2A KingCo conference title

The Liberty High School baseball team clinched its first 3A/2A KingCo Conference title May 1 with a 6-2 victory against host Sammamish.The Patriots, 14-2 in KingCo play and 15-3 overall, will enter the KingCo tournament May 12 at Bellevue’s Bannerwood Park seeded No. 1. Liberty actually draws a first-round bye and won’t play its game until May 14 in the semifinals. The tournament concludes May 16.

Eric Peterson highlighted the victory against Sammamish 3-4, including a home run, and drove in two runs. Peterson, who relieved starting pitcher John McLeod in the sixth inning, also picked up the save.

Troy Colyer also had three hits and knocked in two runs for Liberty. Eric Etter contributed two hits and two runs batted in, and Cameron Talley had two hits.

First-year head coach Steve Darnell was quite pleased with the Patriots’ title achievement.

“It’s been a lot of hard work and a commitment, something I’ve asked from the players from Day 1,” Darnell said. “They’ve done a great job of that.”

The victory was Liberty’s second of the week. 

On April 27, Liberty rallied for a 16-6 win against second-place Mount Si at Mount Si. Troy Askins, Kyle Arbaugh, Colyer, Etter, Nick Hart, McLeod and Peterson each had two hits. Colyer drove in three runs and Arbaugh two.

Liberty trailed early in the game, and was tied 6-6 going into the top of the seventh inning when the team exploded for 10 runs. Dan Eck, the third Liberty pitcher, picked up the victory.
