Eileen Barber will seek re-election to City Council

May 21, 2009

NEW — Noon, May 21, 2009

Councilwoman Eileen Barber announced today she is seeking re-election to the City Council.

“I ran on a platform of preserving our quality of life while planning for our future,” Barber said in a news release. “In these difficult and uncertain economic times, it is more important than ever that we accomplish both for our citizens and our city.”

Barber became the first incumbent to announce her intentions as the campaign filing period for four council seats draws closer. Seats held by Barber, Council President Maureen McCarry, Councilman David Kappler and Councilman John Rittenhouse are open. Mayor Ava Frisinger is also seeking re-election.

Barber joins three declared council candidates: South Cove resident Joan Probala, Issaquah Highlands resident Mark Mullet and Squak Mountain resident Tola Marts. The filing period for municipal candidates is from June 1-5.

Liberty baseball heads to regionals

Liberty High School’s Troy Colyer smashed a three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning Wednesday to lead the Patriots to a 3-2 victory against West Seattle and clinch a spot in the 3A state baseball regionals.

Liberty, 20-4, travels to Centralia Saturday and plays top-ranked Timberline, 21-2, at 1 p.m. in the regional tournament.

Colyer, a junior, went 2-for-3 in the playoff contest, which was called in the fourth inning Tuesday night because of a thunderstorm. The teams were scoreless at the time.

West Seattle scored twice in the top of the fifth, but Liberty answered in the bottom half of the inning.

John McLeod pitched four shutout innings Tuesday and Dan Eck pitched all three Wednesday. Eck picked up the victory.

Issaquah School District will recall most teachers who received layoff notices

May 20, 2009

NEW — 2 p.m. May 20, 2009

Issaquah School District Superintendent Steve Rasmussen said today some — and possibly all — of the 158 teachers marked for layoffs may be able to keep their jobs.

In a letter posted on the district Web site, Rasmussen said a worst-case scenario projected by the district would not likely come to pass. Instead of $10.5 million in cuts, the district stands to lose $7.3 million in state funding.

Rasmussen said the district expects to recall most teachers who received reduction in force notifications last month. The district will likely lose between 40 and 45 positions as a result of attrition, retirements and contracts that will not be continued.

Class sizes will also be increased by one student per classroom next year to help cut costs. The superintendent said principals would also be given more latitude to determine the best class size ratios and how to effectively use staff time.

“While significant, the reductions in state revenue — and our resulting reconciled district budget — will be considerably better than our worst-case scenario,” Rasmussen wrote.
