Junior Shealee O’Donnell anchors Spartan KingCo win

Skyline’s girls track team continues to dominate KingCo, winning its eighth straight title May 15.

Junior Shealee O’Donnell was integral to the girls’ win. The standout sprinter placed second to Issaquah’s Johanna Carr in both the 100- and 200-meter dash with times of 12.48 and 25.44 seconds, respectively. But she also ran a leg of the winning 4×100 and 4×200 relays.

She anchored the 4×200 and held it together just long enough to beat Issaquah by .18 seconds.

“I knew not to pass on the corner, but found an extra spurt of energy,” O’Donnell said after Skyline won the 4×200 in 1:42.58. “I couldn’t have done it if (Kaylyn Berry) hadn’t run such a good leg.”

Helping the Spartans to a second-place (87.5 points) team finish at KingCo, sophomore multisport phenom Kasen Williams earned champion status in three events: high jump (6-02), long jump (22-05) and the triple jump (46-01.5). Williams’ triple jump performance was enough for third in state going into the 4A District 2 meet and beat the KingCo competition by nearly four feet. Read more

10 things to love about ‘Show Boat’

If you’re in the habit of popping gum or a mint into your mouth at shows at Village Theatre, make sure you’re done with it before Cap’n Andy launches into finishing his play on “Showboat.” Otherwise, you might swallow it.

Larry Albert, who plays Andy, literally had people slapping their legs and howling with laughter as he acted several parts of the play, which gets interrupted by a gunshot from a member of the audience of the play within this delightful musical.

And because it’s hard to review a play without spoiling it for those who still wish to see it, (and those who know the story will likely reach different conclusions than those who don’t) this will instead give you a list, in no certain order, of other things to love about the musical, which runs until July 3:

-The sultry, smoky voice of Cayman Ilika, who plays Julie LaVerne. She can make you feel heartbreak deep in your soul.

-The equally smoky, but even deeper reaching voice of Ekello Harrid Jr., who plays Joe. You’ve never heard “Ol’ Man River” like this before. Read more

Students’ artwork at Sunny Hills Elementary School shined brightly at the school’s Art Fair May 7.

“The focus is on the kids’ art work and allows them to create their own pieces,” said Donna Gelinas, chair of the event and PTSA member.

Black-and-white photography, copper-wire sculptures, clay medallions and masks, watercolors and pastel pieces were some of the many types of art families could see. The school puts on the Art Fair once a year.

Many classes chose to focus on a particular piece of work, while others picked a particular discipline or art medium to create their pieces. Read more
