Liberty High School hires news boys basketball coach

Liberty High School has hired Jevon Green as its new head boys basketball coach. Green replaces Steve Billanko, who left Liberty to become head coach at Seattle’s Bishop Blanchet High School.

Green has worked as varsity assistant coach at Lakes High School in Lakewood and junior varsity coach at Seattle’s Cleveland High School.

He is a 1994 graduate of Seattle’s Nathan Hale. He led the team to the 3A state tournament that year, and set a tournament record by hitting nine 3-point field goals against O’Dea.

“Jevon’s basketball experience and knowledge are extensive,” Liberty athletic director Stark Porter said. “We’re exited what he can do for our program.”

Lakeside off to hot start

The Lakeside senior American Legion baseball team is off to a hot start by winning four of its first five games.

Lakeside split a doubleheader Sunday with Taylor Baseball, winning the first game 7-4 and losing the second 6-2. Shane Yarnell, of Issaquah High School, was the winning pitcher in the opener. Catcher Devin O’Donnell, of Issaquah, had two hits in the game.

Other Lakeside victories were against the Yakima Beetles (9-6), and Bellevue Legion (10-0 and 16-3).

Liberty player selected for all-state series

Liberty High School shortstop Eric Peterson has been selected to play in the annual Washington State Baseball Coaches all-star series, June 13-14, in Yakima.

Peterson, the 3A/2A KingCo Conference Player of the Year, will play on the Adams team in the series that highlights top seniors from around the state.

Peterson has hit 12 home runs this spring.

The Adams team also includes 4A KingCo players Sean Murphy, of Woodinville; Colin Hering, of Newport; Alex Potts, of Lake Washington; and Metro League players Mike Bush and Matt Boyd, of Eastside Catholic.

Nick Smith and Nick Andrews, of Eastlake, were chosen to play for the St. Helens team.

Issaquah wins Plateau Challenge

Issaquah defeated Mercer Island 7-6 Saturday to win the title in the Plateau Challenge lacrosse tournament.

Cannon Gardner led Issaquah with five goals. Julian Ritchie added two goals and Ryan Benz two assists.

Issaquah in Emerald City Classic

Issaquah High School’s volleyball team will compete in this year’s Emerald City Invitational and the football team will play in the Emerald City Kickoff Classic.

The volleyball tournament takes place Sept. 4 at Eastlake High School.

Issaquah will play Capital, of Olympia, Eastlake and Archbishop Murphy.

Issaquah’s football team, second in last year’s 4A state tournament, meets 4A KingCo Conference foe Bothell, at 8 p.m. Sept. 5 at Qwest Field.

This is the second time Issaquah has played in the Classic. The Eagles met Mission Viejo, of California, in 2005.
