Molly Nelson: A catcher’s last play

Molly Nelson, Issaquah fastpitch team catcher, hits a two-RBI single for her team against Bellevue in a 2007 game, as she also hit three doubles that day. By Greg Farrar

Molly Nelson was a four-year Issaquah High School softball starter with an outstanding record and a lifelong passion for the game.

Crouched at the knees, her eyes keenly focused dead ahead, she played catcher like a pro. During her last two years, she called all pitches — often without intervention from a coach.

“In my opinion, there was no one better at catcher or (who had) the ability to play that position,” said Jim Magnuson, who recently stepped down as Issaquah softball coach.

In addition to her great arm and imposing defensive skills, Nelson had a .400 batting average this year and led the team in total hits. She earned 4A KingCo Conference first-team honors and helped the Eagles tie for first place in the Crown Division.

“There is no doubt in my mind that if you had to describe someone as a leader on our team, she would be at the top. The girls respect her and her work ethic,” said assistant coach George Bray. Read more

Field day is a ball for Maple Hills students

June 23, 2009

By Chantelle Lusebrink
Classrooms may have computers instead of blackboards, and students may be researching online rather than checking out library books, but some things stand the test of time. You just don’t mess with field day.
That end-of-the-year, age-old tradition is still going strong and is better than ever at Maple Hills Elementary School.
“Everybody has a story about field day,” said Marsha Kauzlarich, an organizer and PTSA volunteer. “When I talk about it with people, like when I went to the QFC in Issaquah, they donated 10 percent toward the Popsicles and the guy that helped me said he remembered field day and loved it. He also went to Maple Hills.
“Kids look forward to it all year.”
On June 15, students raced from the auditorium to the fields surrounding the school to compete in games like tug-of-war, noodle races, hot shoot basketball hoops, jump rope, bean bag toss, hula hoops, wall ball and spoon races.
There were 25 events students could check off on their purple participation ribbons and several that earned them school records.
“It’s just fun,” fifth-grader Nathan West said. “My favorite part about field day is hanging out with my buddy Jake.”
“Yeah, and I like to play tug-of-war,” Jake Collins, his fifth-grade friend, added.
The event is so popular that Maywood Middle and Liberty High school students return to volunteer, but also to play.
“I just remember it getting better and better each year,” said Gabby Smith, an eighth-grader at Maywood. “Now, it’s the same. It’s simple and it’s still fun.”
“It’s a great way to celebrate the end of the year and it’s a tradition here,” said Polly Vaughn, the school’s physical education teacher. “We do some of these events in P.E. all year. But this is more of a celebration and it’s more fun, because we don’t dictate what they do. They have the power to chose.”

Swedish completes land purchase for hospital in Issaquah Highlands

June 22, 2009

NEW — 4:26 p.m. June 22, 2009

Swedish Medical Center executives closed June 18 on the purchase of a second parcel of land in the Issaquah Highlands. The property is the site of a planned 18-acre hospital campus set to open in 2011.

Swedish executives bought the 13.4-acre parcel from highlands developer Port Blakely Communities. Executives bought another parcel in March 2008. The planned hospital will be at the southwestern corner of Highlands Drive Northeast and Ninth Avenue Northeast, across the street from the new Proliance Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine center.

Work is planned to begin at the hospital site this fall. During the first phase, crews will build a medical office building and an ambulatory care center. The first phase is planned to open in mid-2011. The hospital beds are part of the second phase, scheduled to open in early 2012.

The completed hospital will provide inpatient and outpatient services, including oncology, cardiac care, obstetrics, pediatrics and neurosciences. The hospital will also provide emergency services and intensive care.
