Volunteers needed for buildathon

The two Habitat for Humanity affiliates in King County are teaming up for their first buildathon and are looking for volunteers to help build houses while raising money for Habitat. The event, Sept. 19 – Oct. 3, will function much like a walkathon. Volunteers will work in half-day shifts throughout the two weeks and will ask friends and neighbors to sponsor each shift that they work with a financial donation.

Buildathon participants can volunteer at any Habitat building site, including Issaquah, Snoqualmie, Federal Way, Pacific, Rainier Vista in south Seattle and West Seattle, as well as at Habitat offices and the Home Improvement Outlet just off East Marginal Way in Seattle.

Shifts generally will run from 8:30 a.m. – noon and 12:30 p.m. – 4 p.m. Volunteers also can sign up to provide lunch to be shared by the morning and afternoon work crews at a building site.

The goal is to raise money to help Habitat build more homes for families earning 60 percent or less of the median income for King County, or less than $50,580 a year for a family of four.

Corporate support is being sought to help underwrite buildathon costs in the hope that every dollar raised by volunteers will go directly toward building affordable homes in King County.
