Swim team members take first places at senior open

The Issaquah Swim Team had several members who captured first places at the recent Washington Games Age Group Senior Open meet in Seattle.Ben Allen, competing in the boys 13-14 division, was one of Issaquah Swim Team’s big winners. He took first places in the 200 individual medley, 400 individual medley, 400 freestyle, and tied teammate Austin Melody for first place in the 200 breaststroke.

Allen also had second places in the 100 breaststroke and 200 butterfly. Melody beat Allen to win the 100 breaststroke.

Gentry Gevers, competing in the boys 15-and-over division, took first place in the 200 butterfly.

Jacob Leahy was another big winner. He competed in the boys 9-10 division and the 10-and-under division. In the 9-10 division, he won the 50 freestyle and the 50 butterfly. In the 10-and-under division, he captured the 100 freestyle, the 100 backstroke and the 100 butterfly.

Ryan Kinnear, also competing in the same divisions, won the 9-10 50 backstroke, and captured the 10-and-under 200 individual medley. Leahy and Kinnear also swam as members of the first-place Issaquah Swim Team 10-and-under 200 medley relay. Johnathan Cassady and Brandon Leu were other members of the relay.

Matthew Leahy, competing in the boys 8-and-under division, won the 50 butterfly.

In the girls competition, Elise Tinseth, competing in the 15-and-over division, won the 100 backstroke. Tinseth also took second in the 50 freestyle and 100 freestyle. Jessie Dart and Caitlin Duffner, also competing in the 15-and-over division, took first places. Dart won the 100 breaststroke and Duffner took the 200 butterfly.

Linnea Uyenno, an Issaquah resident who swims for the King Swim Team, took first place in the girls 11-12 50 breaststroke and was second in the 100 breaststroke.

In the girls 13-14 division, Maria Volodkevich and Andi Scarcello had second places. Volodkevich was runnerup in the 100 breaststroke and Scarcello was second in the 200 breaststroke.

Midlakes champions

Several Issaquah Swim Team members, who also compete with summer club teams, had winning efforts at the Midlakes League Championships.

In the senior championships, Tinseth, swimming for the Edgebrook Swimming Club, won the girls 13-14 200 freestyle. She also took second in the 100 individual medley. Cassie Burgess, an Issaquah Swim Team member who also swims for Edgebrook, won the 100 freestyle with Kennedi Norris, also of the Issaquah Swim Team and Edgebrook, who took second.

Molly Herman, an Issaquah High School swimmer who competed for Edgebrook this summer, won the girls 15-and-over 200 freestyle. Meghan O’Keefe, a Skyline High School swimmer who competed for Edgebrook, took second in the 100 individual medley.

In the boys 13-14 championships, Allen, swimming for Edgebrook, won the 200 freestyle. He also swam as a member of the first-place Edgebrook 200 medley relay team. Melody, who swims for the Plateau Swimming Club, took second in the 100 individual medley.

In the boys 15-and-over championships, Logan Briggs, a Liberty High School swimmer who competes for the Maple Hills Swimming Team in summer, took second in the 200 freestyle.

In the Midlakes junior championships, William Paxton, of the Issaquah Swim Team and Edgebrook, won the boys 8-and-under 25 butterfly and anchored the winning 100 freestyle relay.

Jacob Leahy, who competes for the Plateau Swim Team, won the boys 9-10 25 butterfly. Leahy also took first place in the boys 10-and-under 100 individual medley. Johnathan Cassady, of the Issaquah Team and Edgebrook, captured the 9-10 50 breaststroke.

In the boys 11-12, Nick Klatt, of Maple Hills, took first place in the 50 backstroke and 100 freestyle. Elliott Schwinn, of Plateau, placed second in the 100 individual medley and Ben Nussbaum, of Newport Hills, was second in the freestyle.

In the junior girls championships, Gracie Luehmann, of Issaquah Swim Team and the Plateau Team, took first place in the 8-and-under 25 freestyle and 25 butterfly. Her older sister Sophie took first place in the 9-10 100 freestyle.Arsenal wins cup

The Issaquah Arsenal won the 14-under division at the Kent Cornucopia Cup July 10-12.

The Arsenal defeated the UPSC Thunder, of Tacoma, 2-1 in the title game.

Prior to the championship contest, the Arsenal defeated the Mount Rainier Futbol Club Premier Viper 2-1; lost to the Maple Valley Premier Vikings 1-0; beat the Bellevue Vikings 3-0; and blasted the South County White, of Kent, 7-0.

The Arsenal was Sam deMers, Cole Ridley, Kinsey Jones, Ethan Seneker, Stefan Leon, Nick D’Alo, Brandon Wyman, Fernando Leon, Tenny Hainsworth, Mitchell Jongejan, Jake Kargi and Garrett Verhagen.

Coaching the team were Rick Wyman and Dirk Jongejan.
