The Lakeside Recovery Senior team plays for the AAA American Legion baseball title today against Yakima Valley Pepsi Pak at 5 p.m. in Tacoma’s Heidelberg Park.
Lakeside walloped the Twin City Titans 12-2 July 28 to reach the state championship round.
The state champion advances to the Northwest Regional Tournament Aug. 6 in Medford, Ore.
Lakeside is the lone undefeated team in the state tournament, meaning Yakima Valley Pepsi Pak would have to win twice today to prevent Lakeside from taking the championship and the regional berth.
Yakima Valley Pepsi Pak knocked out the pre-tournament favorite Kennewick Bandits 15-3 July 28 in a loser-out game.
Lakeside defeated Yakima Valley Pepsi Pak 4-3 in a 13-inning battle July 26 in the second round of the tournament.
Twin City had been a nemesis for Lakeside this summer by winning both games between the teams. However, Lakeside’s offense again erupted early to win the third meeting easily. Lakeside scored four times in the second inning to break a 1-1 tie, then tallied four runs in the sixth inning and three in the seventh. The game was halted after the bottom of the seventh because of the 10-run rule.
Andrew West led Lakeside with four hits. Ryan Somers, of Skyline, had three hits and two RBIs. Trace Tam Sing had two hits and six RBIs. Issaquah High School graduate Mario Sanelli had two hits and drove in two runs. Winning pitcher Jared Lemke, of Skyline High School, worked the first five innings and struck out five.
In the AA state tournament in Spokane, Lakeside-Skyline stayed alive with a 8-2 victory against the Anacortes Steamers. Lakeside-Skyline plays Graham-Kapowsin today at 1 p.m. with the winner meeting the Kennewick Junior Bandits at 4:30 p.m.
