Plan for state Route 900 delays through Friday
July 28, 2009
NEW — 6 a.m. July 28, 2009
Expect delays on state Route 900 this week as state Department of Transportation crews reduce traffic to a single lane.
Through Friday, crews will direct alternating one-way traffic on state Route 900 from Talus Drive to Newport Way from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. daily.
Crews will also reduce 900 to alternating one-way traffic from 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. nightly through Friday. Crews will cut Talus Drive at 900 to a single lane of alternating traffic from 8 p.m. – 5 a.m. nightly while crews install a water line beneath the Talus Drive intersection.
Other closures will occur through December as workers finish the $33.8 million second phase of the project. Phase 2 will widen state Route 900 from Newport Way to Southeast 78th Street. During the completed first phase, the road was widened from Interstate 90 to Newport Way.
Head to three cooling centers if you need relief from the heat
July 27, 2009
UPDATED — 2:55 p.m. July 28, 2009
In response to the excessive heat warning and air stagnation advisory issued by the National Weather Service, several cooling centers have been designated in King County. Issaquah city officials also plan to open two cooling centers.
In Issaquah, county officials are recommending you head to the Issaquah library, 10 W. Sunset Way.
Other cooling centers will open at the Issaquah Valley Senior Center, 75 N.E. Creek Way, from 8:30 a.m. – 9 p.m., Tuesday through Thursday; and Eastside Fire & Rescue Station No. 71, 190 E. Sunset Way, from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday.
“We are a cooling shelter, because our customary operations have air conditioning,” said Marsha Iverson, a spokeswoman for the King County Library System. “We do not anticipate and have no plans for emergency relief. So, if people are already in trouble, we are not the people to help with that.”
Bring questions about compostable packaging to forum Tuesday
July 27, 2009
NEW — 6 a.m. July 27, 2009
As the City Council considers a ban on Styrofoam takeout boxes and other polystyrene food containers, city and Greater Issaquah Chamber of Commerce officials want to bring together business owners and city staffers to discuss compostable and recyclable options.
The forum will not deal with the proposed ban. Instead it will focus on compostable food packaging.
City and chamber leaders are hosting a Business Information Forum from 9-11 a.m. Tuesday at Pickering Barn, 1730 10th Ave. N.W.
The event will include a panel of local business leaders who have utilized such packaging, a presentation from Waste Management and Cedar Grove Organics about food recycling services available to Issaquah businesses and an open house in which participants can talk with packaging vendors about the cost and use of their products.

People, pets should take steps to keep cool during heat wave
July 25, 2009
NEW — 6 a.m. July 25, 2009
As the mercury pushes past 90 during the next few days, health and safety officials urged residents to keep cool. Heat can be especially tough on children, senior citizens and people with chronic illnesses.
“The danger for heat-related illnesses rises when outside temperatures are very high,” Dr. David Fleming, director and health officer for Public Health – Seattle & King County, said in a news release. “Fortunately, all of us can prevent heat exhaustion or heat stroke with some simple steps.”
Health officials offered recommendations to stay cool:
- Wear lightweight clothing.
- Spend time in air-conditioned buildings. If your home lacks air conditioning, beat the heat at a mall or movie theater.
- Drink plenty of water or nonalcoholic beverages, and avoid waiting until you feel thirsty to drink.
- Limit your direct exposure to sunlight if you go outside.
- Never leave infants or children in a parked car, even if the windows are open.
- Limit outdoor activities to mornings and evenings, when temperatures are less brutal.
- Avoid strenuous activities.
- Check on elderly neighbors and relatives.
Girl shot with dart while playing ‘fugitive’ game
July 24, 2009
NEW — 11:30 a.m. July 24, 2009
While playing the “fugitive” game, a female juvenile recently reported she was struck in the back with a dart from a blowgun at about 10:45 p.m. July 14, near the 1600 block of Northwest Gilman Boulevard.
Issaquah Police — who have recently received several calls stemming from juveniles playing the “fugitive” game — have no leads on a suspect. But they are warning the community that the game can often lead to illegal activities and real danger.
“Our police officers are on high alert for any signs of this game taking place in Issaquah,” said Cmdr. Scott Behrbaum. “We’re also asking local parents to talk to their teens about the hazards of this game, which can be unsafe for both bystanders and participants.”
