Black Sox win state tourney

The Black Sox 15U Baseball Club team, bound for the Mickey Mantle World Series, won the 15U Cascade Mickey Mantle State Tournament July 22 by defeating the Premier Tigers 8-3 in the championship game at Marysville-Pilchuck High School.

Winning pitcher Konrads Leitis threw a complete game, holding the Tigers to four hits. John Armour drove in two runs for the Black Sox.

En route to the championship game, the Black Sox defeated the Seattle Rainiers 14-3, Marysville 10-6, Premier Tigers 8-5 and Shockwave 7-6. In the first game for the title, the Premier Tigers defeated the Black Sox 18-9.

In the victory against the Rainiers, winning pitcher Izak Styskal struck out six batters. Matt Gunn, Michael Stewart, David McIlvaine and Armour each had two RBIs.McIlvaine had three RBIs in the victory against Marysville. In the first meeting with the Premier Tigers, Leitis was the winning pitcher, working the first five innings and striking out five batters.

The Black Sox scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to edge the Shockwave. Winning pitcher Ryan Sparks struck out five batters in six innings. Tyler Hillyer had three hits and Jackson Umberger drove in two runs for the Black Sox.

The Black Sox posted a 21-3 record during the regular league season to advance to the state tournament as the top-seeded team. Several Black Sox received honors after the state tournament. McIlvaine, of Issaquah High School, was named tournament most valuable player.

Trenton Nagasawa, Steven Sacia, Matt Gonn, Armour, Hillyer and Stewart were selected to the all-tournament team. The Black Sox finished with a 31-8 overall record for the 2009 season.

The Black Sox advance to the 15U World Series Aug. 4-9 in Owasso, Okla.

The team is Chris Cardoza, of Eastside Catholic High School; McIlvaine, Sacia, Nagasawa and Gonn, of Issaquah High; Leitis and Armour, of Eastlake High School; Sparks and Stewart, of Skyline High School; Styskal, of Liberty High School; Hillyer, of Tahoma High School; Zach Johnson, of Newport High School; and Umberger, of Overlake High School.

Kent Sacia is the Black Sox manager; coaches of the team are Mike Styskal, Sonny Dudoit and Rod Umberger.

    Matt Gonn not Gunn (1 incident)
    Ryan Parks not Sparks (2 incidents)
