City Council approves key I-90 Undercrossing agreement

After business leaders and residents voiced support for the Interstate 90 Undercrossing, City Council set aside environmental concerns and voted Monday to approve a pact crucial to the development of the roadway.
Residents raised concerns in July about wetlands on U.S. Postal Service property near the undercrossing site, prompting officials to review the development agreement. City and postal service officials negotiated a development agreement to allow the city use of a right of way on the land.
Councilman David Kappler supported the agreement, but said before the vote that he had concerns with “the sausage making of this process.”

Hospital excavation could begin this week

Crews will begin excavation work at the Swedish Medical Center hospital campus this week, hospital executives said. Plans call for a medical office building, outpatient care center and — eventually — hospital beds on 18 acres in the Issaquah Highlands. Read more

Work stalls on Front Street properties

The ARCO gas station at the corner of Gilman Boulevard and Front Street remains undeveloped. By Adam Eschbach
City officials issued a building permit for a 10,500-square-foot commercial building at a prime Front Street North location in early February. Since then, however, the site at 670 Front St. N. has gone undeveloped — a result of the cool economy and a tough retail market.
City officials have raised questions about the site — where Skippers restaurant once stood — and a nearby ARCO station in the midst of a delayed renovation project. Council President Maureen McCarry and Councilman Fred Butler raised questions about the ARCO site during a July 8 meeting with City Administrator Leon Kos. Read more

Parent develops creative education for the autistic

When Anne Scroggs learned her son Mitchell Scroggs, 21, had autism in the early 1990s, there was little information and few opportunities for his education.
“When Mitchell was diagnosed, it was so bleak,” she said. “All the literature said people with autism should be institutionalized and that was unacceptable to me. My happy little boy wouldn’t be institutionalized. There was more for him. I knew it.”
Anne and Mitchell Scroggs’ perseverance not only led to Mitchell’s graduation from the Issaquah School District, but to the creation of a curriculum, called Creative Teaching CAP, that Scroggs said she hopes will help other special-needs children reach their graduations as well. Read more
