A fire at Cedar Grove Composting sent smoke billowing into the air early Aug. 17 as crews worked to contain a blaze that began in a woodpile.

Though firefighters quickly contained the blaze at the composting facility south of Issaquah, authorities said the heap could smolder for hours after flames were doused.

Maple Valley Fire & Life Safety crews responded to a report of a fire at about 5:45 a.m. Flames engulfed a compost pile and sent smoke billowing into the air. Firefighters contained the blaze within 45 minutes while news helicopters hovered overhead.

Maple Valley Fire Chief Larry Rude said the blaze was “very, very well contained” by 9:30 a.m.

Crews sealed the smoldering area beneath dirt and compost to starve the flames of oxygen. Rude said light winds and quick action by Cedar Grove employees prevented the fire from spreading. Read more

“Once a rower, always a rower,” NCAA Division II champion Hilary Gastwirth says when asked about her future.

At 22, Gastwirth possesses more experience than most of her peers, taking pride and ownership in winning three individual NCAA titles and was a member of the four-time NCAA II championship team.

It all began when she was 15. One day, she accompanied her mom to watch her cousin Casey Clingan compete on Lake Washington with the University of Washington crew team. During the competition, her uncle, Wes Clingan, a member of the 1972 and 1973 championship UW row teams, turned to her and said that she had the right build for the sport and should consider looking into it.

One call to the Sammamish Rowing Association was all she needed. She bid farewell to middle school basketball and never looked back. Read more

Parents, get your wallets and insurance cards out: Washington state is scaling back on free vaccinations for minors.

In July, Washington stopped using state funds to provide free vaccines for the human papillomavirus. Come May 2010, the state will stop subsidizing all childhood vaccinations, including measles, mumps and rubella, chickenpox, polio, hepatitis B and the diphtheria, tetanus and pertussis vaccine.

By cutting its Universal Vaccine Program, the state will save $48.5 million over the next two years.

The program began in 1990, when the state began providing free vaccinations for children under 19. In 1994, the federal government provided additional funds through the Vaccines for Children program. Read more
