Spartans win soccer showdown

It’s always a big game when the Skyline and Issaquah high school girls soccer teams meet. How big? In each of the past three years, the winner of the Skyline-Issaquah regular season game has gone on to win the state championship.

Skyline might have taken a big step in the direction of defending its 4A state title Oct. 8 when the host Spartans defeated Issaquah 2-0 in a battle for first place in the KingCo Conference standings.

The Spartans, despite a slow start, got their offense going late in the first half to take a 1-0 lead. Midfielder Madi Barney centered a pass in front of the net to teammate Emily Anderson, who knocked in a shot for the game’s first goal at the 33rd minute.

Skyline added an insurance goal at the 52nd minute, when Barney headed in a corner kick from Anna Morgan.

Issaquah had a goal disallowed in the 60th minute due to a foul before the shot.

Skyline goalkeepers Jill Stika and Tina Vargas, who have split time in front of the net this season, shared the shutout.

The Spartans, 10-1 overall, took over first place in the standings with a 6-0 record. Issaquah dropped to 5-1 and into a tie with Eastlake for second place.

In 3A/2A KingCo soccer action, Liberty and Mount Si fought to a scoreless draw. Goalkeepers Macaire Ament, of Liberty, and Marika Loudenback, of Mount Si, each recorded a shutout.

Liberty tennis team nets win

The Liberty High School boys tennis team captured three of four singles matches Oct. 8 and went on to defeat Mount Si 5-2 in a KingCo Conference match.

Sho Kato, Hayden Meriwether and Michael Payant each won their singles.

Chris Weik and Ryan Maio, of Liberty, captured the No. 1 doubles with a 6-2, 7-5 victory against Mike Grant and Tyler Mrachak.

Newport nips Issaquah golfers

The Issaquah High School boys golf team had one of its best rounds of the season, but the Eagles still lost by a stroke to Newport 189-190 Oct. 8 at the Snoqualmie Falls Golf Course.

Newport’s Ben Barker was the medalist with a 2-under-par 34. Kevin Moon led Issaquah with a 37. Devin O’Donnell, Chris Batt and Matthew Gaan each had  shot a 38 for the Eagles.

In other action, Mount Si topped Skyline 185-187 at the Mount Si Golf Club. Mount Si’s Bradley Harrelson was medalist with a par 36. AJ Taylor, Cole Clearman and Nathan Stephenson each shot a 37 for Skyline.
