Three Liberty High School runners qualified for the upcoming 3A state cross country championships at the 3A Sea-King District Meet Oct. 29 at Lake Sammamish State Park.
Josiah Sherwood finished 11th and Tyler Westenbroek took 17th in the boys race for Liberty to qualify as individual runners for the state meet. As a team, Liberty barely missed qualifying for state. The Patriots ended up fifth in the team standings with 138 points. The top four teams all qualified for state.
In the girls meet, Liberty’s Megan Chucka finished 15th and qualified for state.
Bishop Blanchet won the boys team title and Drew O’Donoghue-McDonald, of Seattle Prep, was the individual champion. Lakeside captured the girls title and Tansey Lystad, of Juanita, was the individual champion.
Eastlake netter wins title
Eastlake High School’s Vicente Varas defeated Skyline’s Tyler VanGrunsven 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 Oct. 29 to win the singles title at the 4A KingCo Conference tennis championships at the Nordstrom Tennis Center.
Varas automatically qualified for next spring’s state tournament. VanGrunsven plays Frankie Pavia, of Garfield, Oct. 31, for a berth in the state tournament.
Eagles, Spartans in title game
The Issaquah High School Eagles and the Skyline Spartans battle again Nov. 3, when they meet for the 4A KingCo Conference girls soccer championship at 7:30 p.m. at Issaquah.
Issaquah won the regular season title with a 10-1 record and Skyline took second with a 9-2 record. During the regular season, Skyline defeated Issaquah 2-0. Since that loss, Issaquah had won five straight games, four by shutouts.
The winner of the title game advances to the state tournament while the loser will host a bi-district game for a berth to the state tournament.
