Rain, rain, go away. Come again another day! How many times has this been the chant of Issaquah High School students?

While the majority of Seattle-area school architects are smart enough to realize that Seattle is one of the rainiest parts of the country, Issaquah’s early architects were not so intuitive. Perhaps they wanted to play a great joke on the students and staff of Issaquah High by making it a predominately outside school.Walking the hallways, thinking they are innocently going to class, is a misconception for students as their feet slide into puddles or piles of snow. While the trees make a nice hallway decoration and the snow adds a mystic feeling to the monotonous hours of school, is it really worth having to come to school in full snow gear and rain boots?

Thankfully, someone noticed the soggy books and took initiative to reconstruct Issaquah High. The rebuild will include mainly indoor classrooms, but with courtyards for students to still enjoy nature. Why didn’t the early architects think of that?

Understandably, having fresh air between classes is a nice reprieve, and not having to navigate through closed-in, cramped hallways is always a plus. Similarly, being able to see the sun every once in a while is better than some of the enclosed schools in the area. However, Issaquah High architects have worked hard to incorporate the feeling of an outside school inside to accommodate both students who like tromping through snow and those who do not.

Overall, the innovative building should affect and benefit students who have to deal with the weather. Sometimes, it seems, the weather is a good focus when remodeling. Hopefully, students will appreciate the new school, but maybe rain boots are just too much of a fashion statement.
