Spartans win shootout
The Skyline High School girls soccer team won its 4A state tournament first-round contest Nov. 11 1-0 by beating host Tahoma in a shootout.
Skyline outscored Tahoma 3-1 in the extra period after the two teams fought to a scoreless draw in regulation play. Maddie Christ, Michelle Bretl and Madi Barney connected on penalty kicks in the shootout for Skyline.
Goalkeepers Jill Stika and Christina Vargas recorded the shutout.
Skyline, 15-4-0, plays Todd Beamer at 2 p.m. in the quarterfinals Nov. 14 in Federal Way Stadium. Todd Beamer, 13-4-3, also won its first-round game Nov. 10 in a shootout, knocking off top-ranked Jackson 1-0.
Issaquah, which defeated Bellarmine Prep 3-0 Nov. 10 in the quarterfinals, will host Monroe at 7 p.m. Nov. 14.
Eagles lose volleyball opener
The Issaquah High School volleyball team dropped a tough opening-round match Nov. 12 to Kentwood 3-2 in the 4A state tournament in Kennewick’s Toyota Center.
Kentwood rallied for a 13-25, 15-25, 26-24, 25-23, 16-14 victory.
Issaquah will play either Richland or Auburn Riverside in a consolation match at 2 p.m. today. The Eagles entered the tournament as the 4A Sea-King District champions.
Woodinville, another 4A KingCo Conference team, also lost its opener to Lewis & Clark 25-19, 25-21, 25-17.
