Spartans win Barlow Classic
The Skyline High School boys basketball team cruised past Benson Tech, of Portland,Ore.,71-39 Dec. 30 in the championship game of the Barlow Trail Holiday Classic in Gresham, Ore. Kasen Williams led the Spartans with 15 points and Austin Weige contributed 10 points.
Skyline jumped to an eight-point lead in the first quarter and held a commanding 17-point advantage at halftime.
The Spartans reached the title game after beating Gresham 50-39 Dec. 29 in the semifinals. Cory Hutsen topped Skyline with 10 points and Will Parker had eight points.
In other boys basketball action, Liberty and Issaquah both lost nonleague contests Dec. 30.
Liberty fell to host Jackson 76-59. The Patriots fell behind by nine points in the first quarter and were unable to make up the deficit. Kylan Marlow paced Liberty with 20 points.
Issaquah lost to host Lakeside 61-43.;Nik Landdeck topped Issaquah with 12 points. The Eagles stayed close to Lakeside throughout the first half. However, Lakeside outscored the Eagles 35-21 in the second half.
Eagles take second
The Issaquah High School girls basketball team lost to White River 49-43 Dec. 30 in the championship game of the Les Schwab Classic at Bellevue College. Brooke Paulson, of White River, was selected as the tournament’s most valuable player. She scored 25 points in the title game.
Maddey Pflaumer and Brooke Miller each scored 12 points for Issaquah. Pflaumer also pulled down six rebounds.
The loss was the first of the season for Issaquah, which entered the contest with seven straight wins.
In other action, Skyline lost to Mead 57-30 in the Wenatchee Holiday Classic. No Skyline player scored in double figures.
