Liberty wrestlers top Interlake

The Liberty High School wrestling team dominated most of the upper weights Jan. 7 as the Patriots defeated Interlake 40-28 in a KingCo Conference match.

Hamilton Noel (152), Jay Chakravarty (160), Brandon Studer (171), Nick Bezanson (189) and Chris Harlin (215) all won matches. Chakravarty, Studer and Harlin all won with pins.  Other victories came from Michael Shaw (112), Chris Weik (135) and Danny Dapper (140).

In other KingCo action, Issaquah defeated Skyline 44-33. Ty Morton (112), Andrew Ramirez (130), Jordan Tanner (135), David White (140), Taylor Evans (152) and Tyler Volk (171) had pins for Issaquah.

Issaquah swimmers dunk Redmond

Skyler Kersten and Jack Taylor each won two events and swam on winning relays Jan. 7 as they sparked the Issaquah High School boys swimming team to a 123-61 victory against Redmond.

Kersten won the 200 freestyle and the 500 freestyle. He swam as a member of the Eagles’ winning 200 freestyle and on the 400 freestyle relay teams. Taylor, who won the 100 backstroke and the 200 individual medley, joined Kersten on the 400 freestyle relay team. Willy Matsuda and Brian Ruggles were other members of the 400 freestyle relay team.

Matsuda and Ruggles each won an event and also swam as members of Issaquah’s winning 200 medley relay team. Matsuda won the 100 butterfly and Ruggles captured the 50 freestyle. Other Issaquah victories came from Jake Walin in the 100 breaststroke and Brandon Pomeroy in diviing.

Liberty girls overwhelm Decatur

The Liberty High School girls basketball team shot to an eight-point, first-quarter lead Jan. 7 and cruised past host Decatur 55-26 in a nonleague victory.

Aspen Winegar paced Liberty with 13 points. Breanne Faehnrich added nine points and Danni Sjolander contributed eight points for Liberty, which improved its record to 5-6.

Issaquah girls face big test

The Issaquah High girls basketball team gets its biggest test of the season in 4A KingCo Conference action Jan. 8, when the Eagles host Newport at 6:30 p.m. at Eastlake High School.

Issaquah and Newport, both 5-0, are tied for first place in the Crest Division.

The Eagles enter the game coming off a 51-25 rout of Roosevelt Jan. 6. Maddey Pflaumer topped the Eagles with 17 points in that game.

In other action tonight, Skyline hosts Redmond. The Spartans come off a 64-47 victory against Lake Washington Jan. 6. Rachel Shim had 16 points to lead Skyline in that game.
