Habitat for Humanity of East King County needs volunteers to help build houses in the Issaquah Highlands. The nonprofit needs volunteers at the highlands site Jan. 20-21 and 27-28.Register at the Habitat Web site, www.habitatekc.org, and follow the link labeled “Volunteer: Construction” to sign up. E-mail Individual Volunteer Coordinator Justin Bradley at jbradley@habitatekc.org or call 869-6007.

Volunteers will receive a free T-shirt, a hot meal and entry into a drawing for a restaurant gift certificate.

Habitat homeowners are selected based on need and ability to pay the mortgage. Families earn $20,400 to $40,700 — less than half of the 2008 King County median income for a family of four. Homeowners are also required to live or work in King County for at least a year. Habitat units are sold at cost — about $100,000 —and homeowners repay no-interest loans while Habitat retains ownership of the land.

The new Issaquah units will also help satisfy a requirement for at least 30 percent affordable housing in the highlands.
