Patriots win first league game
Chandler Jenkins scored a season-high 26 points Jan. 19 as he led the Liberty High School boys basketball team to 62-59 3A/2A KingCo Conference victory against host Interlake.
The victory was the first of the season for Liberty in league play.
The Patriots fell behind by seven points in the first quarter, but fought back in the second period to lead 31-22 at halftime.
In 4A KingCo action, Crest Division-leading Skyline topped Ballard 55-46 and Issaquah lost to Inglemoor 55-45.
Skyline trailed by two points after the first quarter, but rallied in the second quarter to lead by one at halftime. The host Spartans stretched their lead in the third quarter by outscoring Ballard 17-9. Cory Hutsen, of Skyline, scored a game-high 17 points. Miles Edwards contributed nine points.
Skyline also defeated Garfield 48-40 in overtime Jan. 18 in the King Holiday Hoopfest at the University of Washington. The Spartans outscored Garfield 11-3 in overtime to pull out the victory. Kasen Williams led the Spartans with 16 points and Hutsen had 11. Skyline and Garfield meet again Jan. 22 at Garfield.
Issaquah fell behind early against visiting Inglemoor and was unable to overcome the deficit. Nick Price led Issaquah with 18 points.
Liberty swimmers cruise by Sammamish
Logan Briggs won an event and was as a member of three winning relay teams Jan. 19 as the Liberty High School boys swim team cruised to a 122-55 KingCo Conference victory against Sammamish at the Julius Boehm Pool.
Briggs won the 50-yard freestyle in a state-qualifying time of 22.67 seconds. He also anchored the Patriots’ winning 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relays that had state-qualifying times. The 200 medley relay, which included Luke Duschl, Shunya Asano and Austin Briggs, won in 1:45.43. The 400 freestyle relay, which included Kevin Hays, Austin Briggs and Duschl, finished first in 3:27.30.
Liberty also won the 200 freestyle relay in 1:35.19. Logan Briggs led off the relay for Liberty. He was joined by Hayden Meriwether, Duschl, and Austin Briggs.
Other Liberty first places came from Raymond Ha in the 200 individual medley, Cameron Kaulia in diving, Hays in the 100 butterfly, Tucker Watts in the 500 freestyle and Asano in the 100 breaststroke.
Issaquah wrestlers dominate Garfield
The Issaquah High School wrestling team overwhelmed Garfield 76-6 Jan. 18 in a KingCo Conference match.
Ty Morton, a 119-pounder, had pin for the Eagles. Alex Stevens, 189, had a technical fall while Taylor Evans, 152, and Garret Becker, 160, scored major decisions.
Liberty routed Sammamish 74-6 Jan. 19 in a KingCo match.
Dan Velasquez (119), Wright Noel (145), Jay Chakravarty (160), Brandon Studer (171) and Nick Bezanson (189) had pins for the Patriots.
