Spartans cruise in tourney opener

The Skyline High School Spartans shot to a 10-point first quarter lead Feb. 16 and cruised past the visiting Ballard Beavers 59-36 in the first round of the 4A KingCo Conference boys basketball tournament.

Skyline, 18-3 on the season, plays Woodinville at 8:15 p.m. Feb. 19 in the semifinals at Juanita High School. The Spartans, who are the top seeded team in the tournament, blew out Ballard 18-8 in the first quarter and held a commanding 33-20 lead at halftime.

Miles Edwards led Skyline with 15 points and Cory Hutsen added 13.

In other tournament action, Ziad Aziz hit a 3-pointer with three seconds left in overtime to left Woodinville to a 56-53 victory against Eastlake. Conner Iraola topped Eastlake with 14 points.

Garfield, paced by Glenn Brooks’ 21 points, defeated Inglemoor 73-54, and Lake Washington topped Bothell 57-53. Garfield and Lake Washington meet in the semifinals at 6:30 p.m. Feb. 19 at Juanita.

In the 3A KingCo tournament, Liberty’s season came to an end when the Patriots lost to Sammamish 77-54 Feb. 16 in a first-round, loser-out game. The Patriots finished the season at 7-14. Sammamish came out hitting and held a seven-point lead at the end of the first quarter. The Totems continued to pull away in the second quarter, holding a 16-point advantage at halftime. Troy Solly led the Patriots with 12 points.

In the 3A KingCo girls tournament, Mount Si topped Liberty 42-40 in a first-round, loser-out game. Maddie Birdsall, Halie Ericksen and Breanne Faehnrich each had nine points to lead the Patriots. Traci Nelson, of Mount Si, led all players with 12 points. Liberty ended the season at 8-13. Mount Si plays Mercer Island at 8:15 p.m. Feb. 18 in the semifinals at Bellevue College.
