Patriots kick off title defense with pair of wins

The Liberty High School Patriots began defense of their 3A/2A KingCo Conference title last week with two victories against the Juanita Rebels.

The Patriots won at Juanita 6-2 March 17 and beat the Rebels 10-9 March 19 at Liberty.

In the March 19 game, Liberty scored three times in the bottom of the sixth inning to overcome the Rebels. Jason Hubbard, Ryan Maio and John McLeod each had two hits for Liberty.

In the March 17 game, Hubbard drove in three runs and McLeod had three hits. Liberty scored four times in the top of the fourth inning to take a commanding lead. Cameron Talley had two hits for Liberty. Connor Sjolander was the winning pitcher.

Liberty began the week by losing a nonleague contest to host Lake Washington 6-5 March 15. Liberty out-hit Lake Washington 7-2, but committed five errors. Troy Colyer had two hits for Liberty.

Spartans edge O’Dea

Tyler Neudorfer had two hits and drove in two runs March 20 to help Skyline top visiting O’Dea 9-8 in a nonleague game.

Skyline trailed 8-6 going into the bottom of the seventh, but scored three times to win the contest.

Anthony DeMatteo and Mikey Smith each had two hits for Skyline. Smith also had two RBIs. Connor Gilchrist was the winning pitcher.

The victory evened Skyline’s record at 1-1.

The Spartans dropped their March 15 season-opener to Mount Rainier 6-5.

Skyline hurlers toss shutouts

The Skyline High School softball team showed some strong pitching as the Spartans opened the season with two shutouts. The Spartans blanked Tahoma 2-0 March 16 and shut out Kentwood 6-0 March 17.

In the Tahoma game, pitcher Lauren Richards tossed a no-hitter and struck out 10.

Against Kentwood, pitcher Elizabeth Stromquist tossed a two-hitter. Margot Sewin and Lindsey Nicholson each had two hits for Skyline. The Spartans scored four times in the bottom of the third inning to take control of the game.

Issaquah boys lacrosse wins twice

The Issaquah High School boys lacrosse club won two Division I contests last week. The Eagles defeated Overlake 11-6 March 19. Jake Fritz had three goals and two assists, and Ben Director scored two goals for Issaquah.

The Eagles, who have won the last two Division 1 state titles, overwhelmed Mukilteo 15-1 March 17. Todd Jones had four goals, Matt O’Neill had three goals and Kevin Powers had two goals and two assists for Issaquah.

Skyline lacrosse notches two victories

The Skyline High School boys lacrosse team opened its season last week with two Division 1 victories. The Spartans defeated Eastside Catholic 15-0 March 16 and whipped Seattle Prep 12-3 March 19.

In the Eastside Catholic game, Jack Pruitt had three goals to lead Skyline. Brennan West, Spencer Matches and Connor Brandt each had two goals.

Issaquah girls victorious

The Issaquah School District girls lacrosse team posted two Division II victories last week.

Issaquah defeated Ballard 17-5 March 16. Katie Mincin had five goals and five assists, Emily Mincin had three goals and Haley Mincin had three goals for Issaquah. Sophie Schielfelbein had two goals and two assists for Issaquah.

Issaquah downed Mercer Island 17-7 March 18. Haley Mincin and Katie Mincin each scored five goals. Brittany Hogan and Emily Mincin each had three goals. Goalkeeper Teegan Cameron made 12 saves.
