State DOT extends deadline; drivers must remove studded tires by April 11

Due to the threat of wintry weather in the Cascades, state Department of Transportation officials extended the deadline to remove studded tires beyond the original Thursday deadline.
Drivers must remove studded tires by April 11. Otherwise, the Washington State Patrol will enforce a $124 against motorists caught with the winter gear after the deadline.
State law typically allows studded tires between Nov. 1 and March 31.
With garbage strike possible Thursday, city officials monitor situation

City officials continue to monitor ongoing labor negotiations between the garbage haulers who pick up trash in Issaquah and contractors Waste Management and Allied Waste.
The city devoted a section of the municipal Web site to the ongoing labor negotiations, and city spokeswoman Autumn Monahan encouraged residents to check the site as negotiations unfold.
King and Snohomish counties haulers voted Sunday to call a strike if a contract dispute could not be settled by Thursday. The strike could begin as soon as midnight Wednesday, when the haulers’ contract expires.
If the haulers strike, the companies plan to recruit managers and nonunion personnel to continue service.

Plan for overnight state Route 900 closures

Crews will close lanes on state Route 900 overnight Monday to hang traffic signals.
Workers will close the right lane in both directions to place signals at the intersection of state Route 900 and Newport Way Northwest, as well as at the intersection of state Route 900 and Northwest Talus Drive. Crews will work from 9 p.m. Monday to 5 a.m. Tuesday.
School is out for spring break

School board approves controversial math curriculum

After a nearly two-year process, Issaquah School Board members voted 4-1 Wednesday to adopt Key Curriculum Press’ Discovering Mathematics algebra and geometry books for high schoolers.
The only dissenting vote was board member Chad Magendanz, who said he felt the process used to select the materials by the district’s teacher-driven Math Adoption Committee could have been more thorough.
Roundabout will remain open after weather delays paving again

The roundabout at East Lake Sammamish Parkway and Southeast 43rd Way will remain open through the weekend, after weather delayed paving for the second consecutive weekend.
City officials had planned to close the roundabout Sunday for paving. The initial plan called for the roundabout to be paved March 21.
The new schedule calls for the roundabout to be paved April 4-5. The entire roundabout will be shut down for the duration of paving.

Troy Colyer had three hits and drove in three runs, and John McLeod belted a home run as the Liberty High School baseball team pounded Bellevue 11-5 March 24 in a 3A/2A KingCo Conference game at Liberty.
The Patriots, who scored seven times in the second inning, held a commanding 10-0 lead after three innings.
Liberty raised its league-leading record to 4-0.
