Keep state roads clean by “adopting” a highway
March 25, 2010
NEW — 6 a.m. March 25, 2010
State Department of Transportation officials encourage residents to keep highways litter free through the Adopt-a-Highway program.
The department seeks businesses, club, organizations, schools, religious groups and families to “adopt” and clean up sections of roadway.
Areas assigned to volunteers usually consist of two miles of roadside. Officials assign the sections on a first-come, first-served basis, and the department maintains a waiting list for popular areas.

Local radio show focuses on holistic health

Program guest and author David Spangler (left) chats during a radio commercial break with ‘Healthy You!’ host, Issaquah resident and Fern Life Center manager Keesha Ewers, during her weekly show in the KKNW 1150AM studio at Factoria. By Greg Farrar
To those who know Keesha Ewers and the Fern Life Clinic she manages here in Issaquah, it comes as no surprise that her “Healthy You!” radio show has just become nationally syndicated.
“There is a thirst for knowledge,” said Donna Frindt, the show’s communications and development manager. “With the current health issues and reform debate, people want a place they can go for important medical information.”
Ewers’ goal is to help listeners help themselves by showing them how not to be dependent on current medical practices, but rather to have an open mind when deciding on the best medical treatment.
She said she does this by interacting with her audience during the show and by answering their often unanswered medical questions.
“People are tired of 10-minute physician appointments and of insurance companies dictating when you can get health care,” Ewers said. “People want good information that they can understand. They are starving for that.”
To help with this effort, Ewers said she strives to bring in people from all fields that pertain to health. She has brought in everyone including psychotherapists, neuroscientists and even financial advisors. Read more

Say YES to Morocco
Katie Cohen, a sophomore at Issaquah High School, recently returned from a semester abroad in Rabat, Morocco. Through the program Youth Exchange and Study, Cohen stayed with a host family and attended a Moroccan school.
“Morocco was one of the three countries the YES program offered, and it interested me because they spoke both French and Arabic,” Cohen said, “I attended a French-speaking school, which used the French system. There are two-hour lectures and then tests, no movies or worksheets like in American schools.”
Cohen discovered that education wasn’t the only cultural difference. Read more
