The Liberty High School girls golf team defeated Skyline 276-279 April 15 in a KingCo Conference match at the Plateau Club in Sammamish.

Liberty coach Michelle Warlick said this was the first time Liberty has defeated Skyline in the three years she has coached the Patriots. She also said the Plateau Club is the toughest course the team plays each year, and the team recorded a score of more than 300 last time it played the course.

Krysta Dawson, a sophomore, led Liberty in the match, shooting a score of 47 through nine holes, her personal best.

“I played really well today for how I’ve been playing,” Dawson said.

Rounding out Liberty’s top five were Tori Braunston, Alex DuVall, Aspen Winegar and Rachel Werner with scores of 55, 56, 58 and 60, respectively.

The greens at the Plateau Club had recently been aerated, and Braunston said that made for a tough round of putting.

“I thought I did worse than I did, but coming up with a 55 was not as bad as I thought it would be,” she said.

Despite the loss, Skyline’s Ashley Young, a senior, led both teams with a score of 42. She said she was very pleased with her individual performance, and she also said the freshly aerated greens made her alter her play slightly.

“Your approach shot needs to be somewhat closer to the hole,” she said, adding that she typically needed to rely on two-putts once on the green.

Skyline’s Emily Baldwin, a senior, took second on the team with a score of 49.

“Putting was tough,” she said about the affect the aerated greens had on the match. “You just have to be very careful how you hit, especially with slopes.”

Rounding out Skyline’s top five were Melanie Busch, Bryalynn Vowels and Amanda Caesar with scores of 62, 62 and 64, respectively.

“A couple of our girls played really well,” Skyline assistant coach Howie Houserman said. “The other girls struggled.”

He gave credit to a Liberty team that gave a solid performance.
