The Issaquah High School girls golf team has usually had a tough time on The Plateau Club golf course. However, on April 29 the Eagles defeated Skyline 255-260 on the Spartans’ home course.

“To go up there and beat them on their home course is very exciting. I know the girls were excited, too,” Issaquah coach Tom Bakamus said. “They’ve had our number the last few years.”

Issaquah’s Katherine Yoon, a senior, led both teams, shooting a 43 on the par-36 course.

“I just let others hit first and see where they aim,” Yoon said with a laugh about how she avoids the numerous hazards of The Plateau Club front nine.

However, Skyline’s Ashley Young was not far behind Yoon, finishing with a 44. Finishing third and fourth were Skyline’s Emily Baldwin, a senior, Issaquah’s Lauren Merdinyan, a sophomore, with scores of 47 and 49, respectively.

Bakamus said he was very pleased with Merdinyan, and he said she has been playing well all season.

Yoon and teammate Elin Skaardal started the afternoon with a bang, as both birdied the par-4 first hole. These would be the only birdies of the day.

However, on the par-3 third hole, it appeared Skyline would strike back, as Young rocketed a shot from the tee and appeared to have sunk a hole-in-one. But, upon walking to the green, the ball was actually sitting many feet past the pin.

“It’s pretty heartbreaking,” Young said about finding that the ball hadn’t gone in.

She would finish with a bogey on the third hole.

Bakamus said the Issaquah girls were solid against Skyline, and that he advises his team to play conservatively on the course, which has numerous hazards and several blind tee shots.

Finishing out Issaquah’s top five were Skaardal, Cassie Chan and Morgan Young, with scores of 53, 54 and 56, respectively. Finishing out Skyline’s top five finishers were Melanie Busch, Shirley Chung and Amanda Caesar with scores of 56, 56 and 57, respectively.

Eagles top Liberty, too

Issaquah made a clean sweep of its district rivals last week.

The Eagles defeated Liberty 229-254 April 26 at the Snoqualmie Falls Golf Course. Yoon took medalist honors with a 40. Skaardal was second for the Eagles with a 46.

Alex Duvall topped Liberty with a 48.

Skyline downed Sammamish 255-286 April 27 at the Bellevue Municipal Golf Course. Young led all players with a 41.

Liberty also defeated Sammamish last week. The Patriots cruised by the Totems 250-290 April 28 at the Maplewood Golf Course. Duvall had Liberty’s top score with a 49.
