Young magician honored at regional magic convention
Matt Wells, an 11-year-old fifth-grader from Clark Elementary School, was honored with two trophies May 1 in the Northwest Magic Jamboree, a regional magic convention in Newberg, Ore.
Wells, also known as “Mattdini,” took second place in the Stage Magic competition, as well as the overall Showmanship Award.
The Magic Jamboree, which started in 1989, draws magicians from throughout the Northwest for a weekend of stage shows, close-up magic, lectures, vendors and camaraderie.
After Wells’ performance — featuring a card routine, multiplying balls and levitating a cane — renowned illusionist and event host Stan Kramien rewarded Wells with a complimentary registration to next year’s jamboree and invited him to give an additional performance at this year’s event.

Ladies and gentleman, start your browsers: The state has unveiled a new website for Internet speed tests.
The state Department of Information Services launched a new section of the Washington Broadband Mapping Program on Friday. New features on the site include a statewide interactive map, and a speed test application to allow users to test actual Internet download and upload speeds against the speeds advertised by Internet service providers. Find the map here.
If promised blazing download speeds feel more sluggish than providers promised, the reason might be geographic.

NEW — 4:15 p.m. May 24, 2010
Learn about homegrown wares raised in Eastside soil Monday night.
Erick Haakenson, owner of Jubilee Biodynamic Farm in Carnation, will talk about traditional farming methods at Zeeks Pizza, 2525 N.E. Park Drive. The discussion starts at 7:30 p.m.
“I don’t think most people in Issaquah realize that one of the best places in America for local sustainable farming is the Carnation Valley,” Haakenson wrote in a post last week on the farm website. “If you are curious to know the difference between a local sustainable farm and a large industrial farm, we invite you to come and listen to Erick next Monday night — it could change your life (I’m not exaggerating).”
Haakenson and his wife, Wendy, grow organic fruits and vegetables, as well as grass-fed beef.

The city selected The Berger Partnership, the firm responsible for redevelopment at Warren G. Magnuson and Cal Anderson parks in Seattle. Officials announced the deal Monday.
Washington State Patrol reminds drivers to properly secure loads
May 24, 2010
NEW — 6 a.m. May 24, 2010
Washington State Patrol leaders remind drivers of the importance of properly securing loads on their vehicles.
State law requires drivers to secure loads before taking to roads.
Maria’s Law was named for Maria Federici, of Renton, who was severely injured by an entertainment center that fell off an open trailer while she was driving on Interstate 405.
The law made it a crime to fail to secure a load that results in bodily injury. Conviction could bring up to one year in jail and $5,000 in fines. The person injured would also have access to a state compensation fund for crime victims.
