Skyline and Liberty high school football teams meet for the first time in three years at 7 p.m. Friday when the Issaquah District rivals tangle at Liberty. Skyline enters the game as the reigning 4A state champion.
The Spartans also won the 4A title in 2008 and the 3A title in 2007. Liberty finished second in the 3A state tournament last season. The Patriots are expected to battle defending 3A state champion Bellevue for the 3A KingCo title this season.
Liberty returns outstanding skill players in Jake Bainton, Chandler Jenkins and Trey Wheeler. Bainton, a wide receiver, and Jenkins, a running back, were first-team all-league selections last season. Wheeler, a quarterback, earned second-team all-league honors last season. He is regarded as one of the top quarterbacks in the state this season.
Skyline has had a tradition of developing standout quarterbacks. Jake Heaps, who led the Spartans to three state titles, graduated last spring and now plays at Brigham Young University. Replacing him is Max Browne, a talented sophomore whose brother Mitch quarterbacked Skyline to the 3A title in 2000.
Issaquah, which reached the 4A quarterfinals last season, opens its season against Heritage in Vancouver at 5:30 p.m. Friday. Among Issaquah’s top returning players are four-year starting linebacker Nik Landdeck and record-setting wide receiver Evan Peterson.
Some KingCo teams opened their season Thursday. In games between 3A and 4A teams, 3A KingCo teams had the upper hand. Mount Si, which could challenge Liberty and Bellevue for the 3A KingCo title, walloped Woodinville 28-6. Lake Washington, which moved down to 3A KingCo this season, crushed Garfield 34-2. Ballard, a 4A KingCo member, defeated Sammamish 15-7.
