Skyline High School swimmers top Issaquah

Maria Volodkevich won two events and swam on two relays that posted state-qualifying times to help lead the Skyline High School girls swimming team to a season-opening 95-72 victory Tuesday against Issaquah at Julius Boehm Pool.
Skyline, the defending 4A state champions, won the 200-yard medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay with state-qualifying times. The 200 medley relay posted a time of 1:53.33 and the 400 freestyle relay won in 3:47.36. Volodkevich, Katie Kinnear, Meghan O’Keefe and Nina Zook composed both relays. O’Keefe, Zook and Volodkevich were members of last year’s Skyline state championship 400 freestyle relay.
Volodkevich, a sophomore, had a state-qualifying time in winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:09.56. She won the 100 breaststroke at state last year, too. Volodkevich captured the 200 freestyle in a district-qualifying time of 2:00.83.
Kinnear, a transfer from Eastlake, won the 100 butterfly in a state-qualifying time of 56.01.
Issaquah sophomores Kayla Flaten and Stacy Maier each posted state-qualifying times. Flaten won the 100 freestyle in 44.29 and Maier captured the 100 backstroke in 1:00.78.
Issaquah also had a state-qualifying time in winning the 200 freestyle relay in 1:45.89. Marit Borth, Maier, Kelly Herman and Flaten composed the relay.
In other action, Liberty lost to Mercer Island 127-52 but had an outstanding performance from senior Nicole Lecoq. She posted state-qualifying times in winning the 200 freestyle in 1:58.67 and the 100 backstroke in 1:02.37.
Spartans soccer team blanks Liberty
Anna DeWeirdt and Michelle Bretl scored goals as the visiting Skyline High School girls team defeated Liberty 2-0 Tuesday in a nonleague game. The victory was the second of the season for Skyline, the defending 4A state champions.
In other action, Issaquah lost to Archbishop Murphy 2-0 in a nonleague game.
