Police said a 55-year-old Seattle man died Tuesday night after he was struck by a runaway backhoe in unincorporated King County between Issaquah and Renton.

The incident occurred at about 5:30 p.m. in the 11900 block of 171st Place Southeast, just south of the intersection of state Route 900.

The man had been clearing property when the backhoe became damaged and a tie rod broke. The victim managed to get the equipment out onto 171st Place Southeast, but the tie rod ended up stuck in the ground like a kickstand, the King County Sheriff’s Office reported Wednesday morning.

The man kicked the tie rod loose and the backhoe started rolling downhill. He ran alongside trying to reach for the controls but slipped and was run over.

Medics transported the victim to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle. He died there at about 7 p.m. Tuesday.

The investigation is being handled by the sheriff’s office Major Accident Investigation Unit.
