Liberty Patriots face Juanita in key 3A battle

The Liberty High School football team, ranked No. 2 in The Seattle Times’ Class 3A poll, gets its toughest KingCo Conference test of the season Friday when the Patriots play at 7 p.m. at Juanita.
The host Rebels, ranked eighth, are 4-0 on the season and have one of the biggest offensive and defensive lines in the league. Running behind the offensive line is standout back Jeremiah Laufasa, who is averaging 115.8 yards a game. The Rebels are coming off a 58-0 rout of Sammamish. Juanita is coached by former Liberty assistant Shaun Tarantola.
Liberty enters the contest with a 3-1 record. The Patriots defeated Mount Si 38-22 Sept. 24. Jake Bainton, who had missed the previous two games because of an injury, caught two touchdown passes for the Patriots.
Bainton is one of the Patriots’ big three offensive standouts. Senior running back Chandler Jenkins is rushing for an average of 158 yards per game and has ran for seven touchdowns. He has also caught 13 passes for 261 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Trey Wheeler has passed for 722 yards and seven touchdowns.
Liberty had a tough battle last year with Juanita, winning 28-21 on a fourth quarter touchdown pass from Wheeler to Bainton.
The Patriots, Rebels and Bellevue are 3-0 in league play and tied for first place.
Issaquah and Skyline hit the road
Issaquah and Skyline high school football teams will be on the road Friday. Skyline, in first place in the 4A KingCo Conference Crest Division, plays at Redmond. Issaquah plays at Kamiak in a nonleague game.
Issaquah quarterback Ethan Kalin, who suffered a concussion in last Friday’s game against Skyline, will sit out the game with Kamiak. Skyline will be without running back Connor Gilchrist who suffered a season-ending leg injury against Issaquah.
Skyline swimmers rip by Roosevelt
The Skyline High School girls swim team overwhelmed Roosevelt 104-71 Tuesday in a 4A KingCo Conference meet at Issaquah’s Julius Boehm Pool. Freshman Stephanie Munoz won the 200 individual medley and the 100 backstroke for Skyline. She also swam on the Spartans’ winning 400 freestyle relay, which had a state-qualifying time of 3 minutes, 43.65 seconds.
Katie Kinnear, who anchored the relay, had a state-qualifying time of 24.25 in winning the 50 freestyle.
Skyline, the defending 4A state champions, swims against Mercer Island, the defending 3A state champions, at 3:30 p.m. Thursday at Mary Wayte Pool on Mercer Island.
Juanita tops Liberty golfers
The Liberty High School boys golf team lost to Juanita 199-218 Wednesday in a 3A/2A KingCo Conference match at Renton’s Maplewood Golf Course. Harrison Diemert led the Patriots with a 38.
