Boys golf  preview

Issaquah High School boys golf coach Tom Bakamus knew his team would have to play its best match of the season to beat Eastlake Sept. 16 at the Sahalee Country Club.

The Eagles had a solid effort, but Eastlake proved too strong as the host Wolves captured the 4A KingCo Conference match.

Eastlake won with 193 strokes to Issaquah’s 211. Issaquah had a four-match KingCo win streak snapped in the process.

Spencer Weiss, of Eastlake, was the medalist with a 1-over-par 37. Alex Ciszewski topped the Eagles with a 40.

Nevertheless, Issaquah’s young squad is off to a strong start. Six seniors graduated from last year’s team, and the Eagles lost another player who moved to Florida.

“We are inexperienced, but deep with the sophomore class,” Bakamus said. Read more

Spartans drop top Oregon team, 38-14

September 21, 2010

After splitting its first two games against Liberty and Bellevue — the teams that played for the Class 3A state football title last year — Skyline High School’s football team hosted the No. 2-ranked team from Oregon’s 6A classification, Lake Oswego, Sept. 17.

So much for a preseason.

In true Spartan fashion, however, a striking mix of big-play offense and timely defense paved the way for a convincing 38-14 victory. The three-time defending state 4A champions face rival Issaquah next week in their KingCo 4A opener. After this tough stretch, the No. 2 Spartans are ready.

“To be honest, we didn’t really know what was going to happen,” Skyline coach Mat Taylor said. “After losing to Liberty, it was like, ‘Holy smokes.’ But our kids responded. You’ve got to play great teams.”

Sophomore quarterback Max Browne completed 17 of 21 for 283 yards and two touchdowns. Kasen Williams caught six passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns. He also threw for a score, connecting with Browne on a 5-yard spiral that gave Skyline (2-1) an early 10-7 lead.

Lake Oswego scored late in the second quarter to cut Skyline’s lead to 17-14 at the half.

“It looked like it was going to go down to the wire,” Taylor said.

But Skyline’s defense stepped up in the second half and forced the Lakers (2-1) into three punts and two interceptions, one of which was returned 96 yards for a score by Michael Ford.

On the first possession of the third period, Lake Oswego marched into Skyline territory and looked ready to jump ahead. But a dead-ball personal-foul penalty killed its momentum.

Browne’s 29-yard pass to Teran Togia and 54-yard bomb to Jordan Simone set up a 2-yard touchdown run by Kai Jandoc that changed the game in Skyline’s favor. Jandoc finished with 105 yards on 22 carries.

Lake Oswego running back Tyson Coleman, an Oregon recruit, never got going. He carried eight times for 50 yards.

Williams, on the other hand, made it look easy. The University of Washington recruit’s 18-yard touchdown catch with two defenders glued to his side put Skyline up 31-14 with 5:39 to play in the third.
