The milestone serves as a reminder for people, businesses and schools to re-examine winter weather preparedness plans.

Gluten-Free Girl hosts Costco book signing Saturday

Noted food blogger Shauna James Ahern — a.k.a. Gluten-Free Girl — heads to Issaquah to discuss the joys of gluten-free cooking Saturday.
Ahern is due at Costco, 1801 10th Ave. N.W., at noon to sign copies of “Gluten-Free Girl and the Chef” — the part-cookbook, part-love story account of how she met and married chef Daniel Ahern.
Gluten-Free Girl started the eponymous blog in 2005 after she learned she had celiac disease. The condition causes intestinal damage if the afflicted person eats gluten, a protein in wheat and other grains.
Ahern, a Vashon Island resident, took to the blog to offer recipes and musings about the gluten-free life.
Watch in real time as King County Elections opens ballots

King County Elections starts to process more than 20,000 ballots at 8:30 a.m. — and anyone can watch the process unfold in real time.
The office has set up a live webcam to display activities in the ballot-opening area at elections headquarters in Tukwila. Ballots then head to additional steps of processing. Learn about the steps here.
The webcam is to remain active ’round the clock until the election is certified Nov. 23.
“We know voters are curious about how their ballots are handled once they’ve been voted and returned,” Elections Director Sherril Huff said in a news release. “Our election cam allows anyone to view the ballot opening part of the process from the convenience of their own computer.”
Issaquah zoo raises more than $50,000 to add cheetahs

Cougar Mountain Zoo is more than $50,000 closer to opening a cheetah exhibit.
The zoo hosted a gala fundraiser last month to raise some of the $100,000 needed to add cheetahs a big cat collection comprised of tigers and a cougar. The masquerade soiree raised $51,800 through ticket sales, auctions and the chance to purchase a photo alongside a 4-year-old female cheetah.
Cougar Mountain Zoo aims to become the first facility in Washington to open a cheetah exhibit.
Zoo leaders announced plans last summer to add a cheetah exhibit and plan to construct and open the habitat by late 2011 or early 2012.
Spot spawning salmon along Lake Sammamish tributaries

The streams branching from Lake Sammamish offer Issaquah residents a chance to see salmon battling the current in order to spawn upstream.
The freshwater kokanee salmon should start emerging from the lake and into tributary creeks to spawn later in the fall.
Starting early next month, look for kokanee from the East Lake Sammamish Trail crossing of Ebright Creek in Sammamish, across from 148 E. Lake Sammamish Parkway S.E.
Or spot kokanee from the 185th Place Southeast crossing of Lewis Creek in Issaquah.
Issaquah Eagles clinch tie for volleyball title

The Issaquah High School girls volleyball team clinched at least a tie for the 4A KingCo Conference regular-season volleyball title Wednesday when the Eagles defeated host Ballard 3-0.
Issaquah won the games 25-8, 25-18, 25-12. The Eagles got strong punch again up front from Rachel Roeder, who had 19 kills, and Sarah Hanna, who had 10 kills. Setter Riley Sorenson had 28 assists and Nina Moore had 11 assists.
The Eagles are 9-0 in league action with one match left to play Oct. 25 at second-place Newport,8-1.
Newport had been tied with Issaquah for first place prior to Wednesday. However, the Knights were upset by Roosevelt 3-1.
In other action, Skyline defeated Redmond 25-22, 25-12, 25-14. Kennedy Stoa had 32 assists and Mikayla Silva had 10 kills for Skyline, 3-6 in league play. Halle Erdahl contributed eight kills and five aces for the Spartans.
Nervous father watches as Giants’ Tim Lincecum tries to make history

Watching his son, Tim, pitch makes Chris Lincecum a nervous wreck — a trait shared by every player and manager the Giants face.
When he’s at the ballpark, Chris Lincecum will wander around the stands. When he’s at home in Bellevue, he’ll take out a three-inch binder and meticulously chart the game.
He did that when “Timmy,” as his dad still calls him, was running roughshod through college baseball at Washington (dominance that still didn’t convince the hometown major-league team to draft him, a fact I promise to never mention again. In this column, anyway; and one that inspires the elder Lincecum to say, pointedly — after ticking off the supposed reasons why Lincecum was supposed to fizzle in the majors, two Cy Youngs ago, “Oops.”).
Chris started a new notebook when Tim joined the Giants’ organization in 2006, beginning with his first minor-league game.
“I don’t do this for him,” he said, chuckling, in a recent phone interview. “I do this for my sanity.”
Skyline High School student injured in crosswalk accident

A Skyline High School student received minor injuries after a driver struck the 17-year-old girl in a campus crosswalk Thursday morning.
Sammamish police and the school resource officer responded to the incident at about 7:10 a.m. Eastside Fire & Rescue medics transported the girl, a junior, to Overlake Hospital Medical Center in Bellevue for a follow-up examination.
Counseling support is available for students shaken by the incident.
Issaquah School District spokeswoman Sara Niegowski said the girl was struck at a crosswalk near the football stadium and staff parking lot.

Issaquah residents can hear legislative candidates discuss education in a recap of a schools-focused election forum.
State House of Representatives hopefuls attended a forum hosted by the Issaquah Valley Elementary Parent Teacher Association at the school Oct. 12.
The municipal access channel, Channel 21, taped the discussion and posted a recap online. Watch the forum here.
The incumbent 5th Legislative District Republicans, Glenn Anderson and Jay Rodne, and Democrats David Spring and Gregory Hoover attended.
