Time Out, Venturettes raise $500 for food bank

Time Out Sports Bar’s Halloween party, hosted by The Venturettes, raised $500 for the Issaquah Food and Clothing Bank.

Presenting the check (above) to Kim Ortego, assistant to the food bank executive director, are The Venturettes, Chris Stoneberg, co-owner of Time Out, and Paul Massey, bar manager.

Issaquah author is finalist in national award

Issaquah resident Barbara Carole, author of “Twelve Stones,” is an award-winning finalist in the biography/memoir category of the “Best Books 2010” Awards, sponsored by USA Book News.

Carole worked as a writer and researcher for undersea explorer Jacques Cousteau in Los Angeles and in Monaco, France.

A former Fulbright scholar and graduate of the University of Wisconsin with Bachelor of Arts and Masters degrees, she lived in Paris for several years as a translator and assistant editor at the “Paris Review” before returning to teach French and French literature at UCLA.

Subsequently, Carole enjoyed a career for more than 20 years as a corporate marketing writer and executive.

Issaquah companies earn international business honors

Issaquah businesses picked up gold-plated Stevie Awards for Women in Business last week. The international competition honored women executives, business owners and their companies Nov. 12.

Issaquah-based Career Woman’s blog, Career Memos, won Blog of the Year.

“Winning this award gives me even more encouragement to continue with my passion of creating educational blogs that help women achieve their dreams and transform their lives,” Career Woman founder and President Lisa Quast wrote.

Issaquah’s Artitudes Design won an award for Community Involvement Program of the Year. Through its program, Artitudes in Action: Art Docent Campaign, Artitude employees volunteer in local elementary schools.

Eagles dominate volleyball team

The Issaquah High School volleyball team, which had its best season ever, swept the top individual honors and dominated the 4A KingCo Conference all-league team.

Issaquah senior Rachel Roeder, an outside hitter, was selected as the league’s most valuable player. Senior libero Alexa Batiquin was chosen as the league’s top defensive player. Todd Parsons, who led Issaquah to the league title and a second place finish at the state tournament, was picked as the league’s coach of the year. Issaquah was 10-0 in league competition.

The all-KingCo first team also included Issaquah outside hitter Sarah Hanna and setter Riley Sorenson. Rounding out the all-league team were outside hitter Ali Forde and setter Carmen Vasilatos, of Woodinville; outside hitter Gwen Gillies, of Newport; and outside hitter Sarah O’Connor, of Roosevelt.

Earning honorable mention were Samantha Rogers and Maddy Emerson of Issaquah, and Jocelyn Reynolds and Andrea Chon, of Skyline.

Aspen Winegar, of Liberty, was selected to the 3A/2A All-KingCo first team. Teammates Sarah Hewitt and Megan Tsutakawa received honorable mention.

Allen McGladrey

Allen “Jerry” J. McGladrey, of Issaquah, died Nov. 12, 2010, in Seattle, after a courageous battle with mesothelioma cancer. His hospital stay was marked by a steady flow of loving relatives and close friends. He was 80.

No services will be held for Al. His cremains will rest here in Washington at Tahoma National Cemetery. Kent, with military honors. Read more

Dale Bernard Quinn

Dale Bernard Quinn, of Ellensburg, died Tuesday, Nov. 16, 2010. He was 81.

Dale was born Feb. 3, 1929 in Timberlake, S.D., the son of Rollie and Gertrude Quinn. He was raised in Everson, Wash., and went to school in Lynden, Wash. Read more

Ada Luetta Scott Thurgood, formerly of Bellevue, died Nov. 15, 2010, in Issaquah. She was 93.

Visitation was Nov. 19. A funeral service was Nov. 20 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Bellevue. Private burial was at Greenwood Memorial Park, Renton. Read more

Richard James Holder, of Langley and a former longtime resident of Issaquah, died Nov. 13, 2010. He was 91.
