Skyline opponent Ferris stays perfect with 14-10 victory over Bellarmine Prep
November 30, 2010
NEW — 9:30 a.m. Nov. 30, 2010
Jim Sharkey has a saying: “You can’t worry about what you can’t control.”
So the Ferris High School football coach won’t let his players dwell on the fact that they have just four days of preparation before facing top-ranked Skyline in the Class 4A state championship game Dec. 4 at 4 p.m. at the Tacoma Dome. And a good chunk of one day will be spent driving back to Tacoma from Spokane.
“There’s no excuses,” Sharkey said after his third-ranked Saxons rallied for a 14-10 semifinal victory against Bellarmine Prep Monday at the Dome. “We’ve played 14 straight weeks now, so we’ll line up and do it.”
It will be a rematch of last year’s championship game, which Skyline won, 45-21. The third-ranked Saxons (13-0) also lost to Skyline in the 2008 semifinals, 24-21. Defensive back Cody Sorenson, one of Ferris’ seven returning starters on defense, is happy to have one final shot.
Crews used more than 600 tons of sand during snowstorm
November 30, 2010
NEW — 8 a.m. Nov. 30, 2010
City road crews used more than 600 tons of sand to keep Issaquah streets passable during the recent fall snowstorm.
The sand has replaced snow along road medians and shoulders a week after snow blanketed the Puget Sound region.
Bret Heath, city Public Works Operations and emergency management director, said crews plan to sweep and collect the sand throughout December. The department then screens debris from the grit and plans to use the sand again if road conditions deteriorate.
“We recycle as much of it as we can,” Heath said. “We’ll pick up it up, store it, screen it and reuse it, either for sandbags or for sanding again.”
Watch out for holiday shopping overcharges, undercharges
November 30, 2010
NEW — 6 a.m. Nov. 30, 2010
Holiday shoppers and business owners could both benefit from paying attention to prices at the checkout counter.
The state Department of Agriculture has determined undercharging is more common than overcharging.
The department’s Weights & Measures Program inspectors checked almost 14,000 items at 148 stores — ranging from department stores to small specialty stores — during a survey conducted in October and November.
The survey showed consumers had been overcharged for less than 1 percent of the items and undercharged for 1.4 percent of the merchandise. The total errors for both overcharges and undercharges came to just more than 2 percent during a comparison of scanned prices and posted prices.
Report: Issaquah commuters spent less time in traffic last year
November 29, 2010
NEW — 6 a.m. Nov. 29, 2010
Issaquah commuters spent less time on the road to Bellevue and Seattle last year.
The typical morning commute between Issaquah and Seattle shrank to 21 minutes — a decline from 25 minutes in 2007. The morning commute from Seattle to Issaquah also dropped, from 20 to 18 minutes. The trip between Issaquah and Bellevue dropped to 15 minutes from 17 minutes during the same period.
The state Department of Transportation said the decreases represent a broader trend. Evergreen State drivers spent less time in traffic last year.
The information is outlined in the annual congestion report produced by the Department of Transportation. Read the complete report here.
State recycling rate holds steady amid economic downturn
November 28, 2010
NEW — 8 a.m. Nov. 28, 2010
Evergreen State residents recycled more than residents in other states, but fell short of a state goal.
Overall, the statewide recycling rate hovered at 45 percent last year, the state Department of Ecology announced last week.
The statewide recycling goal — established in a 1989 state law — is 50 percent. The national recycling average in 2008 hit 33 percent.
The total amount of municipal waste declined by more than 700,000 tons in 2009 — or about 8 percent. The recession has affected the amount of waste produced, causing disposal and recycling to drop.
Plan ahead for Issaquah Highlands lane closures
November 28, 2010
NEW — 6 a.m. Nov. 28, 2010
Prepare for lane closures through 7 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. Monday as crews continue construction on a planned Issaquah Highlands self-storage facility.
Expect two of the three lanes on Northeast High Street between Ninth Avenue Northeast and Highlands Drive Northeast near the Issaquah Highlands Park & Ride to be closed as crews erect steel for the building.
The remaining lane will stay open to help west Highlands Park drivers avoid a long detour, but officials encourage drivers to avoid the area and use Northeast Park Drive for westbound access and Northeast Federal Drive for eastbound access.
Plans call for the self-storage facility to include 500 storage units spread across six stories.
