Clearwire has been granted a building permit to install a 60-foot communications tower inside Klahanie Park.

The wireless broadband provider has proposed three antennae and a microwave dish for the tower. The project is to adjoin the south side of the existing building inside the park. Plans call for the completed equipment and pole to be placed inside a fenced enclosure.King County planners determined the proposal does not pose a significant threat to the environment. The county issued a building permit for the tower Dec. 2.

Concerned Citizens of Klahanie, a neighborhood group, had raised concerns about a proposal to construct the signal tower in Klahanie Park near recreation facilities.

The park, built in the early 1990s between Southeast 32nd Street and Southeast Klahanie Boulevard, includes about 64 acres. The facility features a wetland, a baseball diamond, soccer fields and a restroom.
