Issaquah High School swimmers clinch events

The Issaquah High School boys swimming team picked up two 4A KingCo Conference victories Thursday when the Eagles defeated Skyline and Bothell in Julius Boehm Pool.
Issaquah defeated Skyline 103-73 and beat Bothell 135-39.
Willy Matsuda, Skyler Kersten and Brian Ruggles each won two individual events for Issaquah.
Matsuda won the 100-yard butterfly with a state-qualifying time of 54.85 seconds. He captured the 200 freestyle in 1:54.33. Matsuda also swam on Issaquah’s winning 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle relays.
Kersten captured the 200 individual medley in 2:11.06 and won the 500 freestyle in 5:25.86. The Eagles dominated both races by taking the top three places. Gentry Gevers was second and Ben Nussbaum third in the 200 individual medley. Jonathan Williams and Keith Nussbaum were second and third respectively in the 500 freestyle.
Kersten, Ruggles and Austin Melody joined Matsuda on the 400 freestyle relay.
Ruggles won the 50 freestyle in 23.62 and took the 100 freestyle in 51.80. He also swam on the 200 freestyle relay.
Ben Nussbaum accounted for Issaquah’s other first place by winning the 100 breaststroke in 1:08.23.
Skyline’s Ben Collins won the 100 backstroke in 57.72. Collins also swam on Skyline’s winning 200 medley relay. Alex Marber, Paul Jett and David Jett were other members of the relay.
Liberty gymnasts leap by Sammamish
Tia Riley captured all-around honors and took first in the vault Thursday as she sparked the Liberty High School gymnastics team to a 145.5-124.65 3A/2A KingCo Conference victory against visiting Sammamish.
Riley was first all-around with a score of 31.9. Teammates Hannah Bergam (31.6) and Miranda Jones (31.3) were second and third respectively.
Bergam took first place on the balance beam with a 8.4. Riley won the vault with an 8.4.
Skyline wrestlers down rival Eastlake
Tristan Steciw, Ian Crouch, Jordan McCaslin and Sean McAlhaney all had pins Thursday as the Skyline High School wrestling team defeated rival Eastlake 46-25 in a 4A KingCo Conference match.
Steciw won the 119-pound match by pinning Austin Faccone in 1:51. Crouch took the 152-pound match by pinning Zach Levilce in 4:53. McCaslin captured the 160-pound match by pinning Ryan Green in 1:22. McAlhaney pinned Cameron Coyer in 4:09 to win the 189-pound match.
Jo Tono won the 112-pound match for Skyline with a 16-3 major decision against Chris Dallas.
Sjolander leads Liberty girls past Mercer Island
Danni Sjolander scored a season-high 25 points Thursday as she led the Liberty High School girls basketball team to a 58-53 3A/2A KingCo Conference victory against host Mercer Island.
Sjolander, a 6-foot-1 senior forward, is averaging 16.8 points a game on the season. Her previous single-game high was 20 points against Newport earlier this month.
Halie Ericksen tossed in 14 points for Liberty, which shot to a 14-9 first quarter lead and stayed in front for good.
The victory boosted Liberty’s league record to 3-1. Liberty, 4-2 overall, will be idle until Dec. 27 when it hosts Glacier Peak in a nonleague game.
