The Issaquah Schools Foundation helps fund three after-school programs designed to help students with their homework — Club 7 at Beaver Lake Middle School, Homework Help and Labs after school at the middle and high schools, and the Volunteers of Issaquah Changing Education mentor program.
The foundation’s “mission is to help students achieve the promise of their academic potential,” Executive Director Robin Callahan wrote in an e-mail. “We believe that students having access to free tutoring, and even computers after school, is the difference between school success and failure for many. In addition, we have seen the dramatic difference VOICE mentors can make in a student’s life.”
Short-handed gymnasts tumble to second behind Mount Si

The Issaquah High School gymnastics team came up just short against Mount Si on Jan. 14, but beat Newport and Olympia in a four-team meet.
It didn’t help that Issaquah’s best gymnast, Risa Fukuda, was out sick and another top performer, Taryn Chin, was competing with a minor injury.
“It was a little bit of a rough meet,” Issaquah coach Ryan Fleisher said.
Still, the Eagles finished only a few points behind the Wildcats, 164.9-161.75.
Issaquah has a younger team this year, with Chin being the only senior on the varsity squad. Last year, the team had four seniors on the squad it sent to the Class 4A state tournament.
Younger and competing in all road meets while the high school undergoes renovations, the Eagles face a difficult road to get back to state.

Issaquah swimmers dominate Skyline

Issaquah High School boys swimming coach Laura Halter, playing against her team’s usual strengths, altered her lineup for the Eagles’ Jan. 14 meet with rival Skyline at the Julius Boehm Pool.
The changes didn’t matter as the Eagles swam away with a 106-77 KingCo Conference victory.
Halter wanted to give some of her swimmers a chance to compete in different events. For instance, Skyler Kersten, who usually competes in distance events, competed in the 100-yard butterfly and 100 backstroke.
Kersten did well in both events. He placed second to teammate Jack Taylor in the 100 butterfly and took first place in the 100 backstroke.
Taylor won the 100 butterfly in 1:00.46 and Kersten was second in 1:04.34. Kersten captured the 100 backstroke in 1:01.25.
Halter said having her swimmers compete in other events also gave them a chance at qualifying for district in a variety of events. Read more
