Organizations plan service projects for Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Issaquah residents can honor the legacy of Martin Luther King Jr. on a national day of service.

For the federal holiday to celebrate King, the United Way of King County has gathered a series of projects from local nonprofit organizations. Then, on Jan. 17, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, teams of volunteers plan to participate in human services and environmental projects.

The opportunity to submit a community service project is open to any King County school, park, childcare center or nonprofit organization.

The day of service includes numerous projects in the Issaquah area.

Faith in Action needs volunteers to pitch in and help seniors in Issaquah and Sammamish. Teams also plan to assist the St. Andrew’s Housing Group and upgrade the garden and patio at the affordable Highlands Gardens apartments. The Tavon Center, a day program for disabled young adults in Issaquah, needs help to complete some spring-cleaning.

The day of service roster also includes environmental projects.

Help maintain Cougar Mountain trails alongside the Washington Trails Association. Or, join the Mountains to Sound Greenway Trust to help pot native plants at Lake Sammamish State Park.

Congress established the day of service to honor King in 1994. The holiday is dedicated to civic engagement and volunteerism.
