Students should apply for college financial aid soon
January 25, 2011
NEW — 8 a.m. Jan. 25, 2011
Students planning to attend college in the fall should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid soon.
The application is used to determine eligibility for federal, state and institutional financial aid programs. FAFSA forms became available for the 2011-12 academic year Jan. 1.
The state Higher Education Coordinating Board offers information about financial aid and a link to the online FAFSA.
Each institution has a financial aid deadline, so students should contact the financial aid office of the institution they plan to attend for specific deadline information.
Many aid programs, including the State Need Grant, award dollars on a first-come, first-served basis. So, students should complete the application process well in advance of deadlines.

NEW — 6 a.m. Jan. 25, 2011
Democrats in the 5th Legislative District elected Maple Valley resident Jim Baum as chairman last week.
The district stretches from Issaquah to Snoqualmie Pass, and from Sammamish to Maple Valley. The organization represents the Democratic Party in the 5th District.
“I think we have turned an important corner in politics,” Baum said in a statement. “Conservative right-wing candidates like Sarah Palin have crested. It’s all downhill from here for Republicans.”
The biennial reorganization also shuffled other leadership positions.
The leadership team includes Sammamish resident Robyn Scola as first vice chairwoman, Sammamish resident Dorothy Willard as second vice chairwoman, Issaquah resident Jennifer Sutton as state committeewoman, and Maple Valley resident Mike Barer as state committeeman.

January 24, 2011
NEW — 8 a.m. Jan. 24, 2011
The popular Films @ the Train Depot! series hopes to turn the spotlight on forgotten stars soon.
The upcoming lineup features films — including some familiar titles — from the 1930s and ’40s, the so-called golden age of Hollywood.
“Captain Blood” launches the depot series Feb. 12. The film, released in 1935, stars swashbuckling Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland in a period piece set in 17th century England.
The series continues March 12, as the 1934 version of “The Count of Monte Cristo” arrives to thrill depot audiences. The familiar tale of “Phantom of the Opera” — released in 1943 — concludes the film series April 9.

Evergreen State leaders need help from residents to honor outstanding state employees.
The state Productivity Board has asked the public and state workers to nominate public employees for going the extra mile.
Toby Black at the Department of Fish and Wildlife helped rescue a drowning woman. Frank Curry and Tony Ybarra at the Department of Transportation led the effort to evaluate the causes and find solutions to a catastrophic landslide between Chinook Pass and Yakima. Mike Tupper and Chris Idso at the Department of Corrections spearheaded cost-saving initiatives to save the agency and taxpayers thousands of dollars.
The state employees all received the Extra Mile Award.

Nominate environmentalists for the top city eco-honor — the Ruth Kees Environmental Award for a Sustainable Community.
The annual award recognizes people for a record of outstanding commitment to natural resource preservation. Kees, a teacher, mentor and role model, advocated open space preservation and environmental protection.
The city put out a call for applications Friday. Submit nominations until 5 p.m. Feb. 25.
Then, a committee reviews nominees and recommends a group of finalists to Mayor Ava Frisinger and City Council President John Traeger for selection.
The award is usually presented at a spring or summer council meeting.

Issaquah City Hall drop box opens for February election
January 21, 2011
NEW — 10 a.m. Jan. 21, 2011
King County Elections plans to roll out a half dozen ballot drop boxes before the February special election, including a drop box at Issaquah City Hall.
The box at City Hall, 130 E. Sunset Way, opened Thursday and is due to remain open 24 hours a day until 8 p.m. Feb. 8, Election Day.
The election does not include Issaquah or Issaquah School District voters, but residents in nearby North Bend and the Snoqualmie Valley School District face ballot measures.
The boxes — set up at locations across King County — allow voters to return ballots in person rather than by mail.
The elections office relied on historical use, population densities, planned future growth, proximity to transit services, access and safety data to determine the locations.
The elections office said voters used the drop boxes during the August primary and November general elections last year.
